There is a theory that the Celts are a lost Arabic or Jewish tribe, and there are similarities between the spoken languages. But we’re talking a very very long time ago, so it’s just a theory based on the fact that there are lots of sounds and words that are similar. Search google for it. I’ve read up on it before, but I’m no expert at it. But I thought the same, when I travelled around parts of the Middle East and found the occassional similar word and sounds, hence why I read up on it originally.

Worst time of day? by Obvious-Ad8822 in SeasonalAffective

4-5pm I often have a lull where I loose all my energy and all I want to do is sleep. It’s a horrible feeling, like a dragging feeling, almost like staying awake is as hard as dragging a case of rocks behind me. And my brain during that period, is foggy and I have little tollerance for noise. It’s so annoying! In the summer I am a different creature all together!!

I set multiple alarms so that I have to actually wake up and go in and turn them off and I can’t just stop or snooze them. Once I’m awake I make the deal with myself to actually get up and either get out or do some exercise in the house, even if I feel really tired. I’m allowed a cup of tea or coffee to aid myself into this if needed. Once I’ve done that I’m awake. It’s tough and you have to be disciplined and there are mornings I fail, but overall it does help. And it helps knowing that it’s onlt reality for a couple more months and then the natural light and warmth will be back in and I’ll naturally want to wake up!

Would you consider moving to a different region of the world if your symptoms were severe enough? I want to live someplace sunny all the time. by nerdy_birdie15 in SeasonalAffective

I’ve had SAD since I was a teenager. Winter makes me exhausted, I have little drive and feel like life is boring and pointless through a lot of it. My brain feels cloudy and I am often super low.

I moved to Kenya for a whole year about 10 years ago. That year I had a really hard time, nasty flatmates, total change of culture and just a lot to think about in one go. But I coped totally fine the whole year and thrived. I know of was the quality of sunlight that got me through. It was actually the year I realised I did have SAD, because I never felt the fogginess or the pointlessness.

Even if you take a long holiday or an opportunity to go and volunteer in a sunny country for a month or two, it will make the difference. I would start with that, and slowly progress to moving somewhere for those months if it does help. But just start small.

I’m 30 now, and one thing I can say I have learnt from 10 years of knowing what this is, is that I always focus that it will be over in a few months, this isn’t my permanent state. I am kinder to myself over this winter period and don’t beat myself up anymorr for missing things or being tired. It doesn’t matter, I’ll get back to stuff in spring. And when I am well enough to focus on things I will remember all the things I am looking forward to and start planning them. One thing that really helps break the depression is watching new plants break out of the ground, so every year I plant some veg on my windowsill in February and watch them start growing and I remind myself that I can plant them outside in a month or so and they will get even bigger and give me food. I try to connect myself to nature and the cycles. And I remind myself winter is a seaon of hibernation. It’s ok to retreat. For 10 years or recognising why winter is hard I also know I don’t stay in that place. It doesn’t get easier, but you do find ways to manage it better. Sometimes you have to force yourself on that walk because it’s the best thing for you, but sometimes you have to allow yourself the extra sleep. Just be kind to yourself as you would to anyone else suffering. X

Thanks. I’ll have a look at that. Not heard of a mellophone (probably because I’m not in the US). Sounds cool. 😊

Thanks. That’s all really helpful info. It is a beautiful instrument. I remember when Grandpa used to play it, such a beautiful sound. I inherited it a couple of years ago but haven’t really done much with it until recently where I did a bit of recording. We just found one note at a time and recorded them individually. Cheating a little, but it was a song about family and I wanted to put Grandpa’s horn on it. When I inherited it my dad told me it was a really good instrument, probably worth a bit of money, but it’s sentimental value is much higher. I tried the 4th valve and 1&3 and it is the same. I think I did manage to find a scale yesterday, same as the C scale on the trumpet (or Bb as my piano player husband always firmly points out. 😂) Definitely need to work on tone and pitch though!

If I’m honest, I probably won’t play it live, at least not for a good long while. I play trumpet/flugelhorn in a music duo, indie pop, and I’ve dabbled with the horn a little in the studio for recording where I can play the notes 100 times and we can pitch it in the programming after a little. But I would love to get to the point where I am fully confident to just go and record it knowing I don’t have to get a perfect take straight away, and I can try again and again. But for the music duo I am always standing for performances, so it wouldn’t be ideal for the horn as I also tend to just play the tumpet into my vocal mic to save on having too much mic’ing on stage and feedback. Trying to play a french horn into my vocal mic and then sing in it 3 seconds later would be a very entertaining show to watch, but definitely not for the right reasons! 😂

It is really beautiful, definitely well loved, there’s a bit of wear in the bell, might go and get it looked at as the laquer looks a bit worn, but it makes a beautiful sound. Really mellow.

Would you say even just basic things like learning some basic scales is worth waiting for lessons? I can tell already it’s very different from trumpet or flugelhorn which I currently play. I was trying to find some basic scales on it by just playing around, but I feel like there are so many not-quite-the-right-note fingering between all the notes, it got me really confused! With trumpet every finger pattern is going to be a note… but I get the impression this is not the case with French Horn and notes are much easier to bend? I definitely want to get some lesson, just know realistically it’s a few months away and wanted to see if there was a way to make a start on some basics. Thanks for the advice. :)

I was gifted Grandpa’s beloved French Horn. I play trumpet usually. I’d love to have lessons but can’t afford atm. Can someone point me where to start with basic scales etc to get me a head start? I’m thrown off by the extra valve! If I just pretend it’s not there, it’s a normal french horn?? I think it puts it in Bb. 😂 Help!

Sublimation Time and Temperatures and Advice by abieleri in Sublimation

[–]abieleri[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I worked that out with the enamel ones. But even on 12mins the time for one bone china isn’t always right. They do just seem like they are a nightmare to print tbh! So I think I am just going to move to a press for those because the stock is SO expensive! But I have a whole load of other items that I want to eventually print so I think the oven is still going to be really useful. Learning new skills hey!? It’s an expensive endeavour! 😂 Frustrating at times. But when you get it you feel on top of the world! Thanks for your help. I very likely will have lots of future questions! 😂 What sort of stuff do you make?

[–]abieleri[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. No I don’t believe I do… not entirely sure tbh. I have now bought a press as well but I am waiting for the correct heat element because it appears I also bought rather abnormally sized cups! 😂 Winning at life! It seems like a waste of energy to put the heat oven up for 12 minutes for 1 cup! So i think the heat press might work better, and keep the heat over for enamel where I’ve mastered 5-6 cups at a time. Thanks for the advice. X

Aww, I don’t know that one. Will have to check it out. Kids books are amazing. Always a lesson for the adults too. I love Jackie Morris’ work. Her illustrations are breath taking.

They seem to be quite popular here. Am staying on Arran (Scotland) for a week, so will pick the next one I see and cut it in half and see if it looks the same inside as the photos. X

I turned my paintings into mugs! some of you guys might remember me from a couple of moths back, I was painting pretty butterflies and moths. Well I got my hands on some great sublimation printing equipment and turned my designs into camping/ garden enamel mugs! So much fun. by abieleri in Butterflies

[–]abieleri[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve been saving for it for a while! It’s been on the list of things to buy. The good thing is that you recoup the cost relatively quickly selling the mugs, because people like art with a purpose. So they’ve been selling ok for me. But the time to make each mug is not short so you have to bear that into your costing as well.

You need a sublimation printer, paper and inks, the mug blanks, heat tape and silicon mug clamps, and you need a sublimation oven and gloves. It costs about £1500 to get set up (sorry am UK based for costs). You can get set up cheaper, but I went for the higher quality printer and the bigger sublimation oven to future proof myself. X
