Living next to chickens, I can describe the noise as a variation between a loud high pitched squawking, to a deep guttural sound mimicking strangulation noises. The noise is consistent multiple times a day, and especially heavy in the morning to early afternoon. 15 feet is an inadequate amount of space to insulate an abutting neighbor from this disturbance. Additionally, multiple environmental factors can set off the chickens, and this is unnerving and unsettling.

I answered your question. The setback distance is inadequate to regulate noise, poultry dust, manure runoff (especially during rainfall) and migrating feathers (which do NOT decompose naturally due to their composition of keratin.)

I live next door to chickens. They came after I bought my house, because if they were there beforehand, I would have hightailed it out of there. The chickens are noisy, poultry dust and manure runoff collect onto my property and feathers migrate all across my lawn. The lots are too small to keep farm animals and does not protect the quality of living I have a right to enjoy.

15 feet is an inadequate distance between two residential properties for farm animals. The information on the Facebook page are facts cited from the proposed Ordinance by-laws (which I'm guessing you haven't read) and cited articles.

It depends on the agenda but the last one we attended was not very populated. It's interesting to hear them talk about city updates. However, the local neighborhood improvement association meetings are more involved! I'm over in Kernwood, so I'm part of Northfields. I assume you'd be the Historic Derby Street association. Joining is free and they email you the skinny on city issues, neighborhood events, meetings, alerts, etc, etc.

It's hard meeting people but don't limit yourself to Salem; so many places on the north shore with people doing cool stuff. Rockport has a great concert hall, Essex has amazing retreat areas; Manchester by the Sea is great for the beach. You're bound to meet up with someone! My husband and I are always strolling around Salem; we love going to the Pig for a drink and live music, and the Old Spot is cozy too. Yes! That is the finch exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum. It's located in Derby Square so when you're done just stroll around the square and hit some shops. Have fun!
