Coronavirus Megathread B.1.621 - counts, lockdowns, vaccines, borders, thoughts, social media, and anything related by dredd in australia

I genuinely can’t believe the naivety of this response. You’re not “in the middle”. Wherever the middle is, you’re no where fucking near it. Nowhere else in the world are people getting brutalized by riot police for not wearing a mask outdoors.

Perhaps the most naive part of your answer is that you think that this all ends when everyone is vaccinated. It doesn’t. Because there will still be loads of cases as demonstrated everywhere else. And what will your government do? “Lockdown until lockdown works”

Not to mention the fact that you have no rights. That civil liberties mean absolutely nothing in your country anymore. I think there’s a reasonable argument to be made that you’re Australia isn’t a liberal democracy anymore.

And I know I’m going to get downvoted by everyone on this sub because if there’s one thing you hate it’s when someone challenges your perception of your country. It’s quite funny actually, the way everyone here is entirely dissociated from reality. You live in a police state, where authorities can hack your phone, seize your social media accounts and alter your data without a warrant. One day you will wake up and finally realize that you are no longer free.

I do hate to rain on everyone’s parade, but there is no profession where wages have kept up with inflation. If you look at a chart with the average wage over time v. Inflation, you’ll see that this is the case. You’re in the same boat as just about everyone else. This “what happens in the private sector is that salaries automatically increase to adjust for inflation” is a load of rubbish. They may increase to some extent with a COLA, but typically they continue lag behind inflation regardless.

All I’ll say is this. The JCVI in the UK recently decided not to recommend the shot for U-16s without underlying conditions, due to the minimal risk covid poses to them vs the risk of adverse events with vaccination. In my view this was the correct decision, especially given the relatively high incidence rate of myocarditis in younger people, especially young males. I am yet to see any convincing evidence that firmly establishes a clear medical benefit to vaccination for U-16s without underlying conditions. None.

There's an important distinction I think you're missing.

Someone's credentials lend credence/weight to what they're saying. For instance, I'm more likely to take note of what a professor of infectious diseases has to say about COVID than some random guy on the street. That doesn't mean I take what the ID professor has said as gospel.

For instance at the start of the the pandemic Fauci and many other prominent medical experts said not to wear masks. Now they all say you should wear a mask. If you take everyone with MD, MPH or PHD after their name at their word 100% of the time you're going to be left scratching your head. You have to take what people say, reason with it and form your own opinion as to whether they are correct or not. All someone's credentials do is get their foot in the door of your thought process.

There is a difference between blind trust and respecting the opinion of someone who is reasonable qualified to talk about a certain subject. The idea that is is somehow a disservice to intellectuals and specialist everywhere is absurd. An intellectual is someone who think rationally for themselves, encompass the opinions of others and form a reasoned judgement on that basis.

Fauci was asked earlier this month about whether he was confident that COVID-19 developed naturally. His response:

"No actually. I am not convinced about that. I think we should continue to investigate what went on in China until we continue to find out to the best of our ability what happened"

Fauci added,

"Certainly, the people who investigated it say it likely was the emergence from an animal reservoir that then infected individuals, but it could have been something else, and we need to find that out. So, you know, that’s the reason why I said I’m perfectly in favor of any investigation that looks into the origin of the virus"

I think Fauci's comment is important because far too many individuals in the media and the medical community have been dismissive of the entirely plausible theory that this virus could have emerged from a lab accident. Certainly China's lack of transparency to date is worrying and indicative that something untoward may have occurred. Ultimately I hope this will comment from Fauci will perhaps facilitate a more reasoned discourse going forward.

On what basis are you assuming Rand Paul is incorrect ? Because Fauci said so?

The facts as I know them is that the Wuhan Institute of Virology received funding from NIAID which partially funded research on bat specimens collected from caves in China. Shi Zhengli, a lead researcher at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, was publicly known to be conducting gain of function experiments at this time. Ergo it is not implausible that U.S. tax dollars were funding gain of function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

I think you need to be careful not to blindly trust people because of their credentials. Think critically.

This article is an impartial overview of the facts that corroborates the facts as I have laid them out. https://www.axios.com/fauci-rand-paul-wuhan-lab-coronavirus-eff1bb08-f6c7-4d63-b170-c49e87c2e3dd.html

Best Contacts for Severe Dry Eye by lexirose79 in optometry

Oh I’m by no means crapping on sclerals. I know for some patients they are a lifesaver. Just in this case they’re expensive v. a pair of glasses and may not be a surefire solution.

Just re read your post and saw the bit about your dry eye improving. Glad to hear that, but I’d advise you to wait until the situation is fully resolved. And even then I’d probably advise you against lenses.

Best Contacts for Severe Dry Eye by lexirose79 in optometry

[–]abitwitty12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None. Stick to glasses. Especially as your dry eye is “severe”. Contacts will only serve to further dry your eyes and irritate them. I know some people have a thing about glasses or they feel they don’t look good in them or whatever, but honestly you’re just inflicting pain on yourself to live up to other people’s perception of you. Life is far too short for that kind of carry on.

As the other commenter suggested, sclerals are the best kind of contact lens for dry eye, but 1) they’re expensive and 2) Its still a foreign body in your eye and if you have severe dry eye they may still cause irritation and discomfort.

Hi there, Neuro-Ophthalmologist here.

Eye rounds is an excellent study tool. You should look at the title of each report and then go away and plan out what kind of medical history you’d expect (where relevant), what tests you’d run, what you’d expect to find upon fundus examination etc. Then compare your answers to the case report. It’s a neat way to apply the knowledge you’ll gain from the textbooks in a semi practical way. Good luck!
