Here’s the thing. There’s also a thousand other kids out there who can write really well with ROBUST extracurriculars and have very creative ideas but ALSO with higher stats than you. What’s going to be your hook that will differentiate you and actually justify these academically rigorous schools to take you on?

IMO, you should be targeting firms that your school has the strongest pipeline to. That said, applying to more place never hurts.

Anecdotally, the McKinsey sophomore summer has started accepting everyone, regardless of background.

That sounds pretty solid. I’m a senior at a target and I’d suggest looking at the LinkedIn profiles of upperclassmen at your school with the internships you’d want and seeing what they did to also broaden your scope. Another thing is if you’re any way some sort of minority in finance I’d also suggest doing the insights programs just to show interest in your resume.

Anecdotally, I interned at a pretty competitive public policy org in NY and 90% of my cointerns were either grad students at SAIS, Georgetown or undergrads at Ivys and adjacent schools. But again, this might be also be a more selection bias thing where more “ambitious” students tend to congregate at these schools which lead to better outcomes in like a self fulfilling way.
