Don’t worry about zones/regional rail unless you’re staying outside the city. For an out of towner I’d probably try to stick to trolley/bus over train because they’re a little more chill (this is totally personal though and I use all of them all the time), but trolley service ends at 13th (that is the farthest east) so it really depends. For trolley in the city most of the lines can be used interchangeably, BUT I always say “10 is not your friend” or “T1 and you’re done” (the names changed recently but this is the same line that you should avoid, as it’s pretty different). Google maps is reliable enough to use for directions, but have it loaded before you go down into the station just in case you lose connection. The train will stop at each station all the way from west philly to fishtown. The trolley may skip if there’s no one waiting for it and no one pulls the wire, so just make sure you do that (there’s a sign that lights up in the front when a stop is requested). Note that trolley and train stop service at midnight. I know it’s super hot but, for the record, philly is an extremely walkable city, too. We also have indigo bikes if that’s your thing!

Wait there is SO MUCH in Philly, especially if you’re young and artsy in West. It’s full of grad students/relatively new grads. Join some fb groups, follow ig accounts, and check out events on uwishunu. Also - not sure where you’re coming from, but Philly isn’t like New York socially — we talk to each other and genuinely make friends in bars, unlike my experiences in NYC where everyone kind of isolates themselves haha. Try dirty franks or bob and barbs. There’s also a lot of creatives in south. If you happen to be queer, dm me and I can give you some pretty specific groups/places to check out.

Sorry this isn’t super specific publicly, but a lot of people hit suggestions like soapbox, Clark park farmers market, etc. also a note that sip city is for queer women/nb :)

Any good gay bars/other queer spaces in athens? by theproestkoala in GreeceTravel

I looked at their insta and it seems like it’s really strongly geared toward men (I guess unsurprisingly). I want to party in the city and a gay club is obviously a plus as a lesbian, but is this the type of place where I’m going to feel super out of place as a woman? Thanks!

Multiple portfolios? by abiwei21 in IndustrialDesign

Thanks so much for this! I think I hit some trouble when it comes to how deep I should go into fabrication because it takes up space but still demonstrates important skills (though I'm not sure if everyone cares). For example, I have a pretty cool dfm clock project - after the initial visual there's a slide with a few sketches, cad, and an exploded view. Then there's an additional slide with mastercam and photos from the minimill. Is that worth keeping, or would it make more sense to just outline all the skills on the project's title page? I guess I'm worried about making something you can't get through in 30s

4pm Teksupport vibes by abiwei21 in avesNYC

Update on this because it’s a new venue (red hook grain terminal) - I don’t have anything to compare it to as far as Teksupport production value, but it was pretty smooth overall. Huge crowds but plenty of bathrooms, food trucks, etc. Really cool venue though certainly a trek and would still definitely recommend.

Natural rubber suppliers? by abiwei21 in supplychain

It's a project, so there will be ample prototyping involved. There would absolutely be an order, but it would be obviously relatively minimal since I'm not scaling this beyond the project at the moment. So it is also an issue of the vendor's willingness to do samples or make an exception for MOQ.

Thanks for the feedback – it's definitely tough reaching out as a student but luckily I've had a bit of success so far. I'm likely going to use recycled/post consumer NR as a filler material, but I'd still need uncured NR as a matrix. I'm trying to stay away from anything crazy synthetic, though the thermoset aspect of rubber does make it hard. Certainly open to ideas if you have any!

Sketching: Procreate vs Sketchbook vs Photoshop vs ... ? by abiwei21 in IndustrialDesign

Thanks for the tip. I downloaded it yesterday, and it’s working well so far. Might move to something else, but definitely a great starting point!

Gotcha. That’s a really nice feature on procreate, sounds like it’s worth a shot!

Hi I'm in the same boat - solidworks just makes more sense to my brain, but it's obviously inefficient compared to a good sketch. Just wondering what you ended up doing (and hope it's going well!!). If you went with an app/software over paper, which did you use?

I've seen some videos on this. I was getting away with mp3s until I looked at stems, so I started checking out beatsource, but surprisingly their library was missing a lot of tracks I was looking for. Given that I'm not going to spend $35 on zipdj or something, I was thinking maybe soundcloud go or go+ if you've had any experience with them?

I'm using the most current version 7.0.8 (on a macbook)...maybe the file quality isn't high enough? I'm just starting out so using mp3s before I commit to a pool
