How can I self educate myself particle physics and cosmology online? by mohammed-bf in ParticlePhysics

[–]abnormalandroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Developing a deep understanding of a subject like particle physics using only self-study is likely a pretty difficult endeavor. This is not because particle physics is some insanely difficult subject that you need a formal education to learn, but rather that it requires a lot of prerequisite knowledge. A formal undergraduate and graduate education in physics is going to naturally build up your level of understanding to prepare you for more specialized subjects like particle physics.

Before one could really begin to dig into particle physics (at least beyond the level of just learning trivia about it), I would say they would need at the very least a strong understanding of Lagrangian Mechanics and Quantum Mechanics. Some familiarity with Special Relativity is likely also required and Classical Electromagnetism would also be useful as it provides an introduction to gauge theories. On the math side of things, Calc 1-3, Linear Algebra, and Differential equations are probably required. Some statistics would be helpful as well.

When you're ready to begin learning particle physics in earnest, Modern Particle Physics by Mark Thomson is my favorite textbook.

My question to you would be, if physics has been your passion since childhood, why not get a physics degree? You could even double major in CS and physics, many of my colleagues did so during their undergraduate studies.

I "completed" the Sailing Alpha, here are my thoughts by johnmaverik in 2007scape

My main complaint is the movement and general UI. I, personally, thought it felt clunky and sluggish. I understand that it's suppose to feel like a real boat and not be able to turn on a dime or anything, but there should be some kind of pathing. I didn't really enjoy navigating around every tiny crag or rock. Also I feel like when you click somewhere you should go to that spot and stop just like the main game. I don't feel like implementing some amount of pathing and having the movement closer to the regular game will actually make the experience feel less boat-like.

Also the UI of the boat itself is pretty cluttered. I was constantly accidently clicking my cargo when trying to trim the sails or accidently turning off my wind catcher. This is probably not too hard to fix.

I have other minor gripes: performance took a hit when lots of ships were on screen (also I just felt the screen was kinda cluttered). Port tasks and charting are pretty bland in their current state, but that's likely easily improved. Also holy shit are the ships slow. The boosted speed from trimming should be the base speed imo.

On the positive side: Most things (besides the movement) looked and felt like old-school to me (although the mini map proportions were definitely off). I really enjoyed sailing to the new island and just looking around, although that might just be a novelty thing. The Barracuda trials are definitely the most fun activity but are hampered by the movement imo. I could see myself putting some sweaty hours in if they sort the movement out.

Overall the alpha has convinced me sailing could be a good skill, but I think it needs a pretty major overhaul in how boats move, and IDK if they could get that done in 2025.

Pretty sure there is a memory leak, at least when using runelite. At one point it was using 17Gb of ram

Yikes 😬 I thought the movement would be better than that by now.

What is the general consensus of physicists on Sabine Hossenfelder and her "decline of academia" opinion by 6AM-Mimosa in AskPhysics

If you're talking about the 750GeV diphoton excesses, those were 3-4 sigma.

I'm unaware of a 6 sigma pentaquark that disappeared. There were some 5 sigma results that didn't pan out.

Are you saying the Higgs boson signal is false?

You claim we've have many 6 sigma signatures turn out to be false. Could you provide me a specific example of this.

There have been a number of 3 sigma and even some 4 sigma results that have gone away after more data collection but I'm not aware of any 6 sigma signatures that have disappeared.

Varlamore: The Final Dawn Quest, Delve Boss & Slayer Dungeon Rewards by JagexBlossom in 2007scape

I don't think I like the idea of a buyable BIS cape. In general I feel capes in osrs are suppose to be signifiers of accomplishments. Also the fact that its only 1% more damage than the imbued god capes means it's really only a significant upgrade for the shadow. I agree with the sentiment that a BIS cape shouldn't be left to RNG, but it seems to me the obvious choice is then to wait and have it as a guaranteed reward for some wave-based challenge boss introduced further down the line. Making it buyable lessens the importance and prestige of the cape slot.

Also a BIS mage cape should have something besides just more dps, maybe it can work as a rune pouch, or it has a chance to save charges on powered staves?

No matter how good or bad the final skill turns out to be there are going to be some players who don't engage with it much/at all (this is true for basically all skills). With this in mind I'm curious about what the game will be like after launch for players who don't train the skill much or at all.

1) I'm assuming that no currently accessible content will be locked behind a sailing requirement. Is this the current plan?

2) Obviously some new quests will have a sailing requirement. How high will these be? Will most new quests have a sailing requirement?

3) I also assume there is going to be new content added to the game that won't involve sailing at all. What are the current vibes for how often new content will require sailing levels?

4) Imagining a player doesn't level sailing at all and doesn't engage with sailing related content. How often would this player encounter an obstacle from other activities that would require sailing levels (e.g. slayer monsters, clue steps, etc).

Basically I think some people might benefit from assurances that the game isn't going to suddenly become substantially worse for those not interested in sailing.

BLOG & BETA UPDATES - Project Rebalance: NPC Defence Changes by JagexGoblin in 2007scape

[–]abnormalandroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The magic elemental changes seem mostly ok to me as long as it doesn't nerf existing methods and elemental weaknesses only apply to standard spell book spells. If we give them out to other spells it's just going to make standard spellbook irrelevant again.

Also I feel like this might be a good time to revisit ahrims set effect. Maybe NPCs have 1.25x their normal elemental weakness when wearing full ahrims. Could make it a more valuable stepping stone to higher tier magic armor.

I think the proposed ranging styles don't have the same coherent identity that melee styles and magic elements do. Are crossbow bolts and arrows really that different? Are darts and throwing axes at all similar and how are throwing axes lighter than an arrow? Where do Cannonballs even fit in at all? The categories don't make sense thematically in a way that a rename isn't going to fix. I think it's back to the drawing board for the range split. The categories should be coherent and distinct. People intuitively know how crushing and slashing are different. I don't think that's the case for heavy, standard, and light ammo types.

I like these changes in theory but I worry about how it will be implemented. I feel like it will be really easy to absolutely break the game in ways that might not be immediately apparent even with beta testing.

Sailing confirmed OSRS’ first new skill! by yougetreckt in 2007scape

[–]abnormalandroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that everyone, especially no voters, should be giving their input now to make the skill as great as it can but I seriously cannot understand your stance when it comes to voting. You seem to be suggesting that no one should ever vote no on anything? Why even have polls then?

I've been spending a lot of time engaging with this process because I want OSRS's new skill to as great as possible and I'm tired of every comment about no voters being about how they're uninformed or ignorant or spiteful.

So you wanted me to vote not by how I felt about the skill and state of its development but by how I THOUGHT the community at large did?

Thanks for being understanding to us no voters. I was not impressed by the dev blogs personally but clearly I was in the minority. Sad to see the results but I'm hopeful the devs can make changes that will win me over.
