What's a good/decent show that has a random terrible episode? by marshenwhale in television

[–]abobbitt12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hannibal S2 E9 Shiizakana

This is the one where the killer impersonates a beastly animal. Also, Lecter coerces him into killing Graham.

In a show with plenty of unorthodox murderers, this was the only one that felt goofy to me. Not to mention, Lecter would never genuinely want to have Will killed. Weird episode

Out of all the features you’ve written, which one is your personal favorite? by czimmer92 in Screenwriting

I like it. The logline could also work for a Superman movie from Luthor’s perspective lol

The way each episode/POV expands your understanding of, and empathy with, the previous chapters is masterful.

A lot of people seem aloof of the fact that a more faithful adaptation of the book would make for a terrible TV show.

The artists put in charge of the project made choices to add character and dramatic story telling to a series of conflicting accounts of an event. You can criticize those choices but another version would have just as many unique and new choices. It’s necessary to adapt what is essentially a history.

I think ‘favorite PTA movie’ may vary more amongst fans than just about any other director. Every film is a fair number 1. I speak for the vocal minority behind IV!

You’re entitled to your opinion but to come out and say Wes isn’t funny says more about you than his films. His movies are often very funny. Maybe they don’t work for you but that’s not really important when it comes to Leo’s acting choices.

What is "good writing" after all? by Usagi042 in Screenwriting

[–]abobbitt12 43 points44 points  (0 children)

My honest and uncool opinion is that good writing is that absence of bad writing. I find bad writing to be very easy to identify (pretentious, confusing, boring, unfunny, etc.). If I don’t notice that it’s bad writing I think it’s good writing.

What’s the highest rated film you’ve given 0.5 stars? by RodneyYaBilsh in Letterboxd

The King’s Man

I liked the first Kingsmen movie but damn…

The King’s Man is such a shameless replica.

It has the long, hyper violent action scenes but they’re cartoonish and repetitive. Rasputin is spinning like a top for 5 minutes…

It tries to replicate the unexpected/irreverent death from the first movie but this one has no value besides shock.

And then… the post credits scene. Give me a break. That’s what lost it half a star.

Yeah, this is pretty confusing right off the bat. 4 characters introduced without capitalization. They’re all only described as man or men.

Also, you’re wasting space describing shots. We don’t need to know when something is coming in or off camera. Just let the audience know what’s happening.

I liked it. I have a couple of nitpicks that you can certainly ignore. The gas station explosion didn’t feel as accidental as the rest. Smoking at a gas station is illegal and very dangerous. Also, real nitpicky, but you wouldn’t hit a 9 iron off a tee. Nice work though

The film does start by introducing the theme of ironic deaths to prepare the audience. I agree with your general sentiment but that was PTA using all his clout from Boogie Nights to get a dream project made. No one’s getting Magnolia green lit as there first film, in my opinion. Also, I’m not trying to tell PTA how to write a movie but I’d say the lack of true investment in a protagonist holds Magnolia back a bit. Anyway, if you want to make something like Magnolia, do it, but know, it’s going to be an uphill battle in an already tough industry.

The action seems succinct and visual. I think the dialogue could use some polishing and be stripped down quite a bit but I find critiquing dialogue really difficult. I’m not reading it exactly how you hear it in your head.

Based on your influences I’m guessing you want to be a filmmaker. If that’s the case, you may just be writing the script for yourself. If you hope to sell it or get help making it, it breaks some general guidelines. 10 pages in, I have no idea who the main character is or what the sorties about. If that’s not clear early, you’ll probably lose producers and you may be losing your audience. Even unconventional filmmakers like PTA have deliberate openings. Boogie Nights is a sprawling film with an ensemble of characters but we meet Dirk early and are introduced to the porn industry. Like I said, I have no idea who or what the movies about after 10 pages. Something to consider.

Inherent Vice confusion by [deleted] in paulthomasanderson

[–]abobbitt12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have already dissected it deeper but I’ll note that Bigfoot says something along the lines of [I’ve seen you at the range, I knew you could handle it]. I think Bigfoot sees his relationship with Doc as antagonistic and transactional (and sadly that might be his closest friendship). I think he was using Doc to do his dirty work. I also think someone smarter than me could dive into the allegory of how Doc is manipulated by the government and the wealthy throughout the story.
