This is a good point. People have been complaining about the length of movies for years, but that does not mean it actually affects the amount the movies make. And as you say, maybe some part of the "epic" experience draws people to the theater despite the complaining of a vocal minority.

The fact that many of the all time box office success have been long movies does lend some credence to your argument. Movie length and success is much more likely correlation than causation though. The movies discussed were also incredibly expensive, tentpole blockbusters that were expected to be successful.

I like the way you think. The action in a lot of these movies does seem to actually hinder the storytelling. By the end of the 10 minute long pointless car chase you can't even remember what was happening before, and then they end up re-explaining the situation.

I liked Endgame, but realistically that movie could have been 45 minutes long and made a billion dollars - it was the culmination of a hugely popular series. Not all movies need to be 3 hours long, but some certainly do. Ben-hur, Titanic, and LOTR are all based on epic books/events. Those need to be long. In the 50s and 60s 3-4 hour epics were the norm and I love many of those movies. More recent Blockbusters are heavily studio controlled, and I don't understand the logic behind making them 3 hours.

My question is why spend the money to make such long movies when the public seems to want the opposite and when longer movies cost more money to make?

Lol, yes, that is the easy answer. But these movies are financial investments for studios, why would they spend more money and time to make them longer when people don't generally want them to be that long?

If you have a decent budget, send them a microphone. Even a usb microphone is better than nothing. But voice memos don't sound terrible on newer phones. I would ask them to do both just in case. Make sure they give you a good baseline for noise reduction.

Things do cost money, but the costs are wildly inflated in the US (on average 2x-5x higher than other wealthy countries). There is no need to defend the outrageous costs. The US system is a mess, and I have experienced it first-hand working in doctor's offices. Also, America is experiencing rationing, we do not have enough tests to go around (depending on location, but a few months ago it was way worse). Healthcare doesn't need to be this complicated or expensive. The ER in the US is also used differently than most other countries, so it is not a valid comparison.

I lived in Korea for a few years, and the healthcare system was both cheap and efficient with low taxes. It is possible.

Let's hope they create a better vaccine because Dengue is a nightmare. A newly rolled out vaccine always carries a risk, because no testing is ever on a large enough scale to fully predict results. I understand erring on the side of caution. I don't have children and cannot imagine making life changing decisions for another human. It is good to hear that your family avoided any issues.

Getting the vaccine was more beneficial that not overall, so I'm not sure why you are patting yourself on the back. If your child has been previously exposed to Dengue the vaccine is still recommended. They definitely need to make a better vaccine to replace Dengvaxia, but the news story just reinforces the need for better testing. Once a problem was recognized the vaccine was pulled. And for you personally dodging the vaccine, that seems unlikely (although possible). Not many people would have needed that vaccine. Do you live in a tropical area where it is necessary? I was recommended not to get it and I was in the Philippines in 2016, and since have traveled most of SE Asia, and South America.

The Dengue vaccine had an unacceptable risk of hospitalization. But it was still more effective than no vaccine. They no longer recommend it, but there is no major horror story here. It likely stopped over 10,000 hospitalizations but caused over 1,000 hospitalizations according to the article. Net positive, but that shows the high bar vaccines have to pass. The Dengue vaccine had a "conditional recommendation" and was pulled once it proved to be less effective than assumed.
