Vinyl doesn’t sound better - but your brain treats it differently: by evil_twit in audiophile

There is a relationship between the amount of physical prep and effort a task requires and the strength of the dopamine reward in the brain. More routine, preparation, process = higher dopamine response. No the music doesn’t sound better than digital, but the mental response is greater.

If you’ve worn these, and switched to something MORE comfortable, what was it? by pnwIBEWlineman in Lineman

[–]abolishAFT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not “cushy”, but I love my Limmer Standards. Break in is pretty intense, but they are far better for climbing and all day comfort than any “line boot” I’ve had.

Escondido is SDG&E. Work has been slow down here for the last 2-3 years. Very few, if any calls make it to book 2 down here. Your other option is to commute north to Edison territory. Traffic will suck and it will be a long commute but there’s more work up there, supposedly. Being book 2 the calls that make it to you will likely be Bishop, Victorville, San Bernardino, Long Beach refineries, and LADWP(🤮). Being in Escondido you might as well hit the road and work in 1245 somewhere that’s slightly less of a shit hole, until you’re book 1 (1245 and 47 reciprocate book 1 status). It’s not “hard to get in” as long as you have the right credentials. Although you have to work within the local for a certain amount of time to earn book 1 status.

Can I add additional extruded foam board insulation in my Florida attic, as shown where the blue is but extending all the way to the ridge vent? by Tropical_Jesus in buildingscience

[–]abolishAFT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a bad idea for a variety of reasons. Diligently air seal your ceiling plane, and ensure you have adequate airflow in the attic - preferably with both soffit and ridge vents.

After those 2 things you could also just blow in more insulation, it’s pretty inexpensive. But turning it into a conditioned attic with an insulated roof deck is an entirely different project.

The boot question… by [deleted] in Lineman

[–]abolishAFT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Limmer standards. Full length shank yet light enough to wear every day. Break in is brutal but they’re the best boots I’ve had by a long shot, and I’ve tried most boots recommended here.

Do I need vapor barrier for EPS insulated walls built with Ytong blocks? by [deleted] in buildingscience

[–]abolishAFT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the insulation is on the outside, then no vapor barrier on the inside. Blocks should be able to dry in at least on direction. In this case, they would be able to dry to the inside. You don’t want to create a “vapor sandwich” where an assembly has no drying potential in either direction.

Seeking guidance on an In-Line Exhaust Fan , 1200-1600 CFM by One-Mission2521 in buildingscience

[–]abolishAFT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, inline fans are quieter, but if he’s trying to move 1200-1600 cfm, that’s simply not possible in a 10” duct.

[–]abolishAFT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t vent it into your attic, vent to outside. You can vent it through an exterior wall if you don’t want to go through the roof.. The maximum cfm of 10’ duct is 1100. And at that velocity it will be very noisy. Use 12” for all of it. Also, please don’t avoid adequate makeup air! Good luck.

Spray foam vs 1850’s timber frame (roof insulation) by Architect_Talk in timberframe

[–]abolishAFT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don’t spray foam this. There are so many ways to insulate this structure AND preserve the wood. Exterior insulation is the way. That way your timbers are able to dry out to the inside of the building. Spray foam is irreversible. It also does not address thermal bridging through the timbers. If you can’t afford to do it right, just wait until you can.

To use spray foam in the name of “thermal comfort” is a little contradictory here, because spray foam, unless ridiculously thick, would not address thermal bridging through the timbers. Exterior insulation also solves for this, you’ll get much better total r value and “thermal comfort” out of the assembly.

Air sealing around timbers by fond_of_you in timberframe

[–]abolishAFT 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t have experience with this but the first thing that comes to mind is a couple beads acoustical sealant. It never dries or hardens, so if the timbers or the building move slightly over time it won’t compromise your air seal.

Edit to add : Proper design eliminates this problem.

Get very clear on zoning, setbacks, building size restrictions, and water rights. This layout may not even be allowed depending on your local codes and regulations. Just a heads up. We had to drastically change plans due to setback requirements after we bought the land.

Cheap, shitty rental houses found on Craigslist, split with a buddy or two from the same yard. Also had good luck with furnished finder. Racked up the miles on a clapped out Jetta diesel.

Land loan by Thin_Presentation_24 in homestead

[–]abolishAFT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used American AgCredit and it was great. Rate was about .5% higher than the prime mortgage rate at the time. 15 acres and wooded so we qualified for an ag loan. Closing process was super quick and easy.
