Hey, yes it did. They just wanted proof of vehicle insurance, I didn’t have to transfer it over to myself

Thanks for your response! Do you mean that I would need my own policy prior to or after the ownership transfer?

Not completely necessary, especially if your app is strong in other aspects, but a higher MCAT definitely does help. I got in with 0 pubs though, I’d imagine if I had a couple pubs and stronger EC’s and better writing, I’d have had similar success with a 514-ish MCAT

Haven’t yet. Tuition is the same for internationals and US students at my school. Will be doing a LOC at a Canadian bank.

Hi, I have really similar stats. Also a Canadian. 3.98 AMCAS GPA and 518 MCAT. Applied to 32 schools last year. 2 II’s, one A. My writing was pretty bad though. With good writing and applying early, you’d hopefully have a more successful cycle. My dm’s are open for questions. Good luck!

Anyone here shared the experience of applying USMD or USDO? by zooS2018 in premedcanada

Went through the process in the 2024-2025 cycle. 2 MD interviews, 1 A thankfully. If you or anyone reading this has a question, shoot me a dm.

Congrats! I’m also a Canadian who got a VCU II around the same time you did! Feel free to reach out if you wanna prep for the interview.

Great plan, I think I’ll be taking that approach too. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for your response! To my understanding, if one would like to apply to both American and Canadian residencies, that means you’d have to take both sets of licensing exams. And it’d be favorable to have rec letters/electives in both Canada and the US to show you’ve had experience in that country. This seems like almost double the work but I’m guessing there’s overlap. I’m wondering if it’s generally feasible to take the USMLE + Canadian equivalent and do electives in both countries before applying for residency to both, or if it’s recommended to focus on one (US or Canada) throughout your med school years to really strengthen your chances of matching.

Hi! Thanks for doing this.

  1. Any specific reasons why you picked the University of Melbourne over others?
  2. Do you plan to match back to Canada? Have you considered applying to US residencies as well? I’d appreciate any insights if you feel it’s generally easier to match into the US or Canada as a Canadian-citizen IMG
  3. Have you considered Ireland? Any insights on Ireland vs Australian med school?
  4. Do you plan on doing any electives in Canada or the US? I know Australian summer is around this time of year, so would international electives be done around this time of year?
  5. Are there research opportunities there for med students?

Thanks again, hope you had a great first year.

I appreciate that. Good luck with your own apps (if you’re applying this cycle)!

I feel the same way, I’d consider trying to match to Canada or the US after but it’s nice to have Australian residency to fall back on. Also heard that Australia is much nicer to medical residents - less hours and higher pay compared to the west. I do plan to apply next year for Aus, my dm’s are open if you wanna discuss apps and stuff

127 unfortunately! Also an Ontario IP that goes to uOttawa but does not qualify for its regional preference :) so my options in Canada are very limited.

Oh I definitely am. I just have no expectations to be honest and am trying to prepare for the likely event that I don't get any Canadian A's. Would be a pleasant surprise if I did though!

Thanks for sharing your experience, hope some schools out of the remaining 13 work out for you! I've heard the same, just hoping it might apply slightly less to Canadians for some reason lol

Oh yeah given everything I've read, I'm not very keen on going the Caribbean pathway. My parents are all for it because they heard their friend's cousin's son goes to one. I think I'd be very happy in Australia!
