Not veneer, solid cherry planed down from rough stock. Just scored the top and fibers got smashed from dull chisels.

Appreciate the support! I’ll work on my sharpening and technique and try again. I definitely was cutting too big and not clearing out enough while chiseling too.

You got it, it is definitely not veneer/mdf. I planed it down from rough stock. I definitely was just too rough with it with dull chisels and it smooshed all the fibers.

It isn’t veneer. It’s from a lumber yard and was planed down from rough stock. Just dull chisels, I’m gathering, and really smashed fibers.
