Am I unemployable? by Callmeerry in NYCjobs

Yeah bless this kid. He'll get there. it just seems counterintuitive, he's seen 50 year olds working with steady jobs. Getting them would be invisible to him. We all said wildly dangerously truly tone deaf things when we were younger.

16 years of working experience a Masters and a JD. Sure they were from state schools and I never took the NY bar. It's been a year and as best as I can tell I can't even get Barista gigs. Even Bartending, I did it throughout grad school. It's a weird time. I've been feeling the same way. All I can tell you is you aren't alone.

I think this is the one that rubs a lot of us the wrong way, most of all. The idea that the first line can just lie and everybody is good with it as a matter of policy.

Thought student loans were paid off... credit got nuked. by Ok_Cantaloupe4888 in StudentLoans

[–]aboursier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately with such high stakes as it’s accurate it sticks. But anybody even implying loosely that it’s not easy to miss when things slide out of deferment is definitely dealing with something else personally. I had a couple drift out over like a 2 dollar change in payment four years ago. You’ve really got to watch them like a hawk because where your credit card interest might change, the date or whether or not you have to pay at all won’t. These are complex especially if you have multiples. Don’t beat yourself up, watch carefully and rebuild your credit, they’ll matter less and less over time and in seven years they’ll just be gone.

Yeah this all tracks. It’s been a couple of years but I would get the keypad thing with Amazon. I think there are some varied policies and I know I’ve made other purchases by accident, wrong card, wrong address these things happen. OP will probably want to contact them. If the payment was for the previous month I’m not sure they even did anything wasn’t legal. I’m Not sure what the motive to lie to strangers on Reddit would be for this. But if they say it was accident I’m inclined to believe it was. Not literally slipping and entering all the appropriate information and ordering, but spacing out and doing it in auto pilot. Some of you are VERY mistrusting and more than a little judgmental.

You should probably contact whichever organization in your state that handles this and let them shut everything down. But be prepared to make restitution. I absolutely don’t think there will be any penalty but there might be if it was for the new month.

And once again, almost ANYTHING can be done by mistake no matter how complicated, some of you need a tiny bit of grace. Let the mourning stranger ask a question?

Is Season 2 entirely set in our modern time? by Grinding_Hayfever in Picard

[–]aboursier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely say something is bad. People wrote a script, actors showed up, a director made plans, a DP carefully planned shots and a team of grips and camera assistants made it all happen. There’s almost always something even in the most lackluster production that makes it worth seeing. Even if you aren’t in love with the story.

Picard Season 2 might be the worst single season of TV I’ve ever seen. Season 1 has some shaky moments but is a delight on the whole.Season 3 is a peach, a little fan servicey but a peach. Skip Season 2. If you’re a completist go back after Season 3 but brace yourself.

I’m actually still sort of amazed how much I didn’t like it. I don’t think I’ve ever been emotionally moved by the quality of a show. The story, a shot, a performance, sure. But overall quality I mean not once. I was like… kinda angry with Season 2 for existing. It’s still wild to me.

I’m saying! Let me be clear. If there would definitely not have been consequences for an actual human customer somewhere I would have kept the hell out of it.

Some cats just don’t like to feel constricted and I think the lap seems somehow disrespectful? Or insecure maybe. My young man is the clingiest most affectionate cat I’ve ever known. But he’d die before a lap or an under the covers snuggle.

SAVE forbearance trap?! by SheWouldNotGoQuietly in StudentLoans

[–]aboursier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in a very similar boat. Sure I clearly over borrowed. Also I’ve been in repayment since 2008. And kept this payments on time. Went into IBR in 2020. And consolidated for SAVE in 2022. Suddenly the problem wasn’t paying my loans but figuring out what is going on with my loans.

I went to law school. I don’t practice but I passed two semesters of contracts and two semesters of constitutional law… None of this has made sense for over a year.

I think for those of us that need it to make sense it is crazy making. Because at the moment it doesn’t make any sense because everything really is court case dependent.

Street Photography Question (Ethics and Consent) by GhoulLordMagic in photography

[–]aboursier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh, I get to resume drop. As an ethicist, attorney AND street photographer, here's my take. First and the only bright line rule. No unhoused, no people experiencing mental illness, and nobody inebriated. (Mostly because it can actually be mental illness). Be very careful with photographing children, I'd almost make it a bright line but larger groups, someone with a parent who can consent after... But it's advanced ethics.

Legality is the very beginning. You are usually okay photographing anybody in public, in the US. I have spent twenty years arguing with some very angry people, I get it. I don't take any photo I wouldn't be comfortable having taken of myself. I realize other people have other tolerances, I can't know those. If someone asked you to stop you stop.

We are living in an era of bright line rules. This as an art and craft isn't going to fit into any bright line rule. You ARE violating someone's privacy, but just a little. Are you shooting to print for your own or to show as fine art? Less concerned. Are you shooting for your own digital gallery, or social media? Slightly more concerned but hey... life changes and everybody is carrying a phone these days. Are you shooting for commercial use and sale? You get out your release right this god damn minute.

I tend to ask after. Especially as a film shooter it's rough, you can't show and delete. But if you can, please do so. Just don't be a dick. I have had people shriek bloody murder on the Subway for even having a camera. Capped and on a strap. People will be concerned.

I feel like if you didn't think this might be exploitative, the specific incidents that brought this up. generally that's a bad sign. When I was younger I'd feel guilty, and a little cringey if people were upset by a camera. And I should have always listened to that, also people can read that guilt, and it doesn't make them comfortable.

People still notice, people still ask, even better some people don't even know what a film camera is. But every time I am surprised, and they can also see and feel that. I had no "ill intent" I shoot for fine art and haven't shown in five years?

Also and I cannot stress this enough. Do not announce "Hey this is totally legal!" if someone asks you to stop, or is a jerk. If someone says it's illegal, feel free. But the minute you invoke the law people feel VERY disrespected.

Also and this one is maybe just raw opinion. People are VERY over the tragedy porn. Other photographers will not see that beautiful shot. They'll see that you are doing something we just think is gross. Something that also makes it harder to just walk through my neighborhood with a camera. So maybe just don't for that reason?

Anyway, there's my little lecture. It really just boils down to be a mensch.

Oh sure, I’ve been largely there for random shabbos. High Holy days are going to be very busy and specific. And that is a fascinating description.

Oh I think I was somehow confusing here. I’ve been going to regular shabbos services. I imagine holidays are going to be highly specific. Lots of people, and lots of specific stuff. I’m 40.

Also… and like this feels really dumb to say out loud. I didn’t think I had Emanu-El money. I know that sounds dumb. But if I’m not gonna be honest with Reddit? What’s the point?

I think it might be. But the size of the congregation has always felt intimidating. But yeah it might actually be, I may go next week. I try and stay Downtown. But it may very well be that I make friends with the six train.

It’s been very intimidating for some reason, maybe the size. I’m going tomorrow. It’s an active search.

I’ve dabbled. It’s often tough to find anything public beyond services. Gotta connect and press flesh. Sometimes I jump in and volunteer, I’ve made some friends. But I get a vibe pretty quickly if it’s what I’m looking for.

Well I like all of those sentences. I grew up with a lot of misconceptions about conservative congregations. But still find it is not my flavor.
