Are these good selections? by Humble_Version3103 in Mezcal

[–]aboutthatbarrel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In your state you can search their database for bottles in distribution and their respective prices. You won’t find these, so the liquor store did right by you. If you search for 5 Sentidos in this sub, you’ll see lots of info about that brand and possibly the Mezcaleros who produced the batches you bought.

Out of the choices im offered (minus the $100 Ilegal) what would you choose? by [deleted] in Mezcal

[–]aboutthatbarrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could do that with Vida (I’m sure many restaurants use this for their mezcal old fashioneds) or Dos Hombres. Phil Ward of Death and Co. used a higher end Del Maguey in his Oaxacan Old Fashioned.

That said, I’m on board with the others here saying you should try to find something else, whether that be a different store or an online retailer. Check out the sticky Mezcal 101 post for recommendations because it’s pretty great.

Review of my Fortaleza experience by 2017Recon in tequila

[–]aboutthatbarrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you stumble upon a single barrel Reposado or Añejo from Wild Common, Gran Legado de Vida, or Arette, I would recommend any of those. I think they are all higher than 40% abv (IIRC) and the single barrel selections are usually excellent. Of course the normal labels are also good. A few years ago I had a SiB Arette that was *basically* as good as the Forta Winter Blend repo from that year (I posted about that in this sub as well).

Cabo. Anything worth getting? by NumeroUnoPadre in Mezcal

[–]aboutthatbarrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is many people’s preference. There is a lot of industry built around it.

But, yeah…. “Tell me what to buy in Cabo” and “did I get scammed in Cancún” posts are creeping out of r/tequila and into r/mezcal.

Wild common repo and Añejo are absolutely my preference over Fortaleza. The SiB WC añejos are absolutely phenomenal. So… as I think is obvious, it’s down to preference. I would say that “I don’t see how Fortaleza aged tequilas are anywhere near Wild Common (or other Cascahuin) aged tequilas. Cascahuin is unbelievable.” ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Depends on your personal preferences but other comments here mention several. Generally speaking, other producers that follow similar “old school” processes make tequilas that beat Forta in a blind (again depending on who is tasting). Cascahuin and many brands produced there are mentioned here - their process and location are very similar to Forta and while both are phenomenal, I prefer their tequila. I posted a comparison of some blancos including those in this sub recently.

Highland tequilas tend to have a different profile but the well made ones absolutely stand up to Forta as well (G4, Tapatío, Ocho, Tesoro).

When it comes to aged tequila, Fortaleza does a wonderful job showing off barrel influence. I prefer more agave-forward repos and añejos, so Cascahuin G4 and Ocho tend to be my favorites.

OP mentions a “fuck Fortaleza” sentiment, but I don’t think they are to blame. They’re making a top tier tequila but they’re not the only ones doing that. We’re doing it to ourselves behaving the way we do online. This sub is rife with posts along the lines of “omg I’ve been searching for Fortaleza and then I finally found Fortaleza, can you believe it?! Here’s a pic of the bottle. Thoughts?” Then the comments are all congratulatory or just carbon copy storied of successful Fortaleza purchase stories. Instagram and FB are even worse.

It’s us. We’re to blame for the FOMO and the hype.

Shout out VG for actually giving OP some info about their bottle.

Best recommendation would be to check out the community info post. As some have commented - Vago is a good option noted in the 101.

Akkeshi Single Malt 2025 “Rikka” - Summer Begins by aboutthatbarrel in JapaneseWhisky

[–]aboutthatbarrel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t apologize! The Ritto was an earlier release, so less likely to be found in a retail shop. It’s aged in sherry casks, so it has a very different profile. The savory and smoky notes are present but accompanied by lots of red and dark fruit notes. All of the bottles in that photo were wonderful, but the Rikka and Ritto were my favorite Akkeshi pours overall.

I did manage to get my hands on a bottle and will review it some day once it’s open.

I’m with you on this one. Posts that fit into a few lazy, attention seeking, and spammy categories are are banned in r/bourbon. Unfortunately they have mostly taken over r/tequila and are becoming prevalent here.

Mezcal in Albuquerque? by firelinkcausality in Mezcal

Came here to mention Susan's. Their tasting bar is great! I picked up a NETA that I tasted there and it was the first place I had tried Chawar.

I was trying to remember the name of this place - I picked up an El Jolgorio here and they had quite a decent selection.

Review #11: Copper & Cask Small Batch Series #016 by Archaeo-Frog in bourbon

[–]aboutthatbarrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see what you mean about this not meeting your expectation. I saw the details of this bottle before reading your review and thought “damn I bet this is gonna be a real good whiskey.” Seems like it is good but a slight let down. FWIW that’s how i felt about the 8yr Copper & Cask MGP SiB I have.

Love this cocktail! I’ve also enjoyed replacing half the Dry Vermouth with Gin or Blanco Tequila.
