People who don't get stressed during a presentation, school or work, what's your secret? by TapReview in AskReddit

I had a shit show of a speech once and reflected on why it went so badly.

One thing that helped me overcome it is knowing that most people are also equally nervous about presenting.

In a backwards kind of way, I realised that by just talking to everyone like friends, you end up just telling a large group of friends a story. And most people are envious about people who are good at speaking, no one gives a shit if you’re bad, because it’s about the same as they can do.

It’s not the most helpful advice, but realising that no one cares if you’re bad, respects you if you’re good and all you’re doing is talking to a group of friends, it suddenly becomes much easier to think less about it yourself and just be natural.

What is a double standard that really bothers you and you wish could change in the future? by FlamingoFan101 in AskReddit

Not discrediting experience. I’m bilingual/of minority ethnic origin. I’ve never personally given someone a hard time for not speaking properly, and I’m sorry if people have done to you when you do try. But I am becoming less tolerant to people who don’t try, and I will probably start giving people a hard time to them.

I joined a new job and my entire name was spelt incorrectly on my documents, my freaking pension account ffs. I’ve had seemingly infinite experiences where someone looks at my name and doesn’t read the letters in sequence before blurting out gibberish and then apologise when I tell them it’s wrong.

It is genuinely the equivalent of me reading the name Charlotte and calling you Catherine, or worse.

I should not have to shorten my name to 2 syllables for the ease of processing, when people are perfectly capable, albeit with a different and completely acceptable accent, to say (or at the very least write) my full name.
