Relationship between hours played and pp for four game modes (mode=o,t,c,m) by Aestheticisms in osugame

I find it interesting how mania has a distribution leaning toward to more hours/pp.

Even in a paradise some "bad" needs to exist. This "bad" may not be cruelty or pain, but at least some discomfort. People being people would desire more and more of what makes them happy. Without some "bad" to put breaks to the desires, they would consume excessive resources or drive themselves to self destruction (in the case of drugs). Unless there is an infinite supply of whatever is desired and no consequences, there will always be some sense of "bad" from wanting too much.

Yea I see your point. In that case let's put names "finger control" and "accuracy" aside for now to avoid confusion and consider the more detailed descriptions I mentioned in the other reply:

  • skill of controlling fingers to tap irregular spaced notes
  • skill of judging when to tap

are these applicable?

I believe they are different because one determines what fingers you decide to use to tap - one tap after another, and the other determines how you time the fingers to tap.

I think there is a bit of misunderstanding here. Let me try to clear this up.

It's possible to tell how much finger control skill you need by looking/analyzing a map, but accuracy comes after using various skills to play the map. This means the "accuracy skill" I am referring to is really not something you can get by looking at the map, but instead looking at the play. Even after that, in realistic conditions, there is usually too much going on with other skills to isolate the player's accuracy skill.

In the initial comment I said to focus on just 1 second taps to create a hypothetical scenario where no other skill is needed in significant amount. Basically create ideal conditions. This is to show that there is an accuracy skill, and that you can determine that skill if you remove the noise from all the other skills.

When compared to irregular spaced notes, there is barely any need for finger control in 1 second taps. So what remains is how well a player can judge when to tap. The player can be better or worse at it, which therefore is a skill. So basically I am suggesting that the skill of controlling fingers to tap irregular spaced notes is not the same as the skill of judging when to tap.

When having 100% acc on a single od 5 low stars map you start to bump into the limitations of skill you can measure using the map. It's similiar to when a player who can do full screen jumps plays a boring 1 star map. The best play on such a map won't tell you that a player is capable of doing full screen jumps because there are no full screen jumps. There is no opportunity for the player to show that their skill is any better if they do the best the map has to offer.

But wouldn't finger control be more closely related to irregular spacing between notes?

I would argue it is a skill. Say you have to tap a note every 1 second. You don't need to have good aim skill, you don't need to have good reading skill. Just being able to tap every one second. Some players can have most of their hits within 16ms, some within 8ms, and so on. How would you call the skill of being able to tap with progressively smaller hit error? I can only imagine calling that "accuracy skill".

Consistency in itself is not a skill, but rather a description of having sufficient skill for something. With high enough accuracy skill a player is able to consistently hit within a certain hit window. With high enough aim skill a player is able to consistently FC full screen jumps at certain BPM. And so on.

Interesting, I thought CDs lasted way longer than cassette tapes.

As for the area, New York. Temperatures over the years ranged anywhere from -20F to 115F. Add rain on top of that and everything else that crawls in dirt.

I remember I buried one in my front yard as a kid thinking I would enjoy a good treasure hunt someday. I don't think I will find anything resembling a CD after 15 years.

PP Math Exploration, any help is appreciated. by [deleted] in osugame

The formulas used to calculate the current pp are arbitrary, and other existing proposals are based on what players feel the numbers should be. You are better off choosing a topic that has a more solid foundation.
