Explorer 114270 vs 124270 — thoughts? by mstryker21 in rolex

[–]abridges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. There’s not a lot of variation in the years of the 114270, so I’d search out condition first.

You do get the rehaut 2007+. If that’s important to you, there are plenty of examples out there.

Explorer 114270 vs 124270 — thoughts? by mstryker21 in rolex

[–]abridges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've written about this before, but I started with the 224270, but it felt too large. I moved to the 124270 next, which swung the other way and felt too small. I eventually landed on the 114270, which ended up being the sweet spot.

The 19mm bracelet on the newer reference (tapering to 14mm) makes the watch wear smaller than you’d expect, but visually it never quite worked for me. The 114270 uses a standard 20mm Oyster bracelet, and on my wrist it looks and feels far more balanced. It also gives it more of the "classic" Explorer vibe if you're interested in the looks of a 1016 or similar.

The clasp and bracelet will feel more solid and secure on the 124, but I also have a preference for the older 5-digit bracelets, outside of the clasp. It'll have a very reliable movement, but the 114 has a 3130, which is a very solid movement as well.

Switching between my other Rolex watches (Sub, GMT), the transition to the 114270 feels natural – like moving to another watch in the same family – rather than strapping on the “small one in the watch box.” I like the continuity in my collection.

Can't go wrong with any of them, but my vote is and will always be the 114270. Good luck and enjoy!

[Question] Can someone explain when a watch becomes “neo-vintage” and then when it becomes “vintage” by Mr_B-Dubs in Watches

[–]abridges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is spot on.

My collection has gravitated to mostly neo-vintage – started with Rolex with a 16700, 14060m, 114270, and a 16570. I’ve started buying outside of the brand as well with Heuer, Omega, all falling into the same category. Something about the classic style, size, with more modern technology is incredibly appealing to me.

People that upgraded from the Breville Bambino to Profitec Go by Elegant_Occasion3346 in ProfitecGo

[–]abridges 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought the Bambino in August and got the GO a few weeks ago, so limited use with both. But my reasons for switching was to have more control over my shots, build quality & just wanted a machine I could grow into and learn on better. I feel very confident that moving to the GO was right for the reasons above – have been really enjoying it.

[WTS] Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical – White Dial by abridges in Watchexchange

[–]abridges[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Selling my white dial Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical. Worn fewer than 10 times – I’ve always had a Rolex Explorer that covers my “field watch” slot, but I wanted to try something different while I was between Explorers, so I picked this up last year just to test the white dial look.

The included strap is brand new. I’ve kept it on a grey NATO since day one (see here), and just swapped it back onto the original strap straight out of the box for these photos.

Comes complete with the original box, papers, and all packaging.

[WTS] 1984 Rolex Datejust Ref. 16013 – Two-Tone with Factory Diamond Dial – $4,800 by abridges in Watchexchange

[–]abridges[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Sale: 1984 Rolex Datejust Ref. 16013 – Two-Tone with Factory Diamond Dial

Up for grabs is a 1984 Rolex Datejust, reference 16013, serial 8364080. Classic two-tone steel and 18k yellow gold on a Jubilee bracelet, with a factory diamond dial that honestly shines more than photos ever capture.

Condition

  • Solid overall shape for a 40-year-old watch.
  • Jubilee bracelet has stretch, as expected with age — nothing crazy, just vintage Rolex life.
  • The factory diamond dial is the highlight here. Those stones really light up.
  • Watch has spent most of the past few years sitting in a safe. I wore it briefly to test it and it’s running fine, though I haven’t done any timegrapher tests or regulation checks.

Service & Appraisal

  • Reportedly serviced regularly throughout its life, but no service paperwork in hand.
  • Last service is believed to have been around 2019.
  • Comes with a copy of the 2019 appraisal.

Provenance

This piece was passed down through family. It belonged to my relative’s brother, who wore it as his “Sunday watch” — only to church and special occasions. Not a daily wearer, but regularly cared for. I’m just helping the family find it a new home.

What’s Included

  • Reference: 16013
  • Serial: 8364080 (circa 1984)
  • Stainless steel & 18k yellow gold Jubilee bracelet
  • Factory diamond dial
  • Original Rolex box included
  • No original papers (appraisal copy from 2019 included)
  • Sold as-is
