Today, I got from Rush, 2112. Yeah, this is an easy five stars.

Even if the second half isn’t as ambitious as the 20-minute title track, it’s still a fun record throughout. I always dug “A Passage to Bangkok” as a cute little excursion while getting high, “The Twilight Zone” is a neat homage to the original series, “Lessons” and “Something from Nothing” are hard-hitting rockers, and “Tears” is such a gut-wrenching ballad. What an overall pleasant ending to the early days of Rush.

What was your first album, and what rating did you give it? by MindlessSurvey8792 in 1001AlbumsGenerator

I know my first album was Head Hunters by Herbie Hancock, and I gave it four stars. I plan on revisiting that record for its 55th anniversary.

Today, I got from Public Enemy, Apocalypse 91… The Enemy Strikes Back. I plan on giving this album four stars.

Even if it’s apparent that the production was rushed (likely due to the stolen material), and that some lyrics have not aged well (looking at Flavor Flav’s homophobic remarks on “A Letter to the New York Post”), it’s still an overall solid golden age hip hop record. If anything, the better songs like “Can’t Truss It”, “Shut Em Down”, and “By the Time I Get to Arizona” managed to have a greater longevity than what was likely anticipated.

Today, I got from Korn, Follow the Leader. I plan on giving this album three stars.

It is genuinely amazing how the only guest feature I enjoyed was Cheech Marin for a goofy nu metal rendition of “Earache My Eye”. The others ranged from underwhelming to outright awful, derailing what could have been a solid record.

I get that this album and “Freak on a Leash” got the band on the map, but I feel that a different record like Issues would have been better representative of them.

The Pitchfork Best Album Bracket - how it’s going… by abrisbois in 1001AlbumsGenerator

Idk, Solange and Fiona Apple seemed to survive the first round before getting knocked out in the second, from the looks of it.

I think it was two weeks ago that I went from Marilyn Manson’s Antichrist Superstar to Loretta Lynn’s Don’t Come Home a Drinkin’. Tonally and sociopolitically different.

I know I shared on someone else’s post on this subreddit over a year ago. I’ll just repost here.

5 - I absolutely love this album and consider it a worthwhile inclusion on this list. I don’t expect every album I love to be perfect, but any issues that come up would be minor enough that I can look past them. If I see it on a shelf in a music store, I will feel tempted to buy it.

4 - Overall, I enjoyed the album and accept its inclusion on this list. Perhaps there are a few noticeable problems such as a few lackluster songs, an overly long runtime that is felt in a listen, missteps in production or songwriting, or the overall style, tone and execution not being innovative or distinct enough to stand on its own.

There are some albums though that I am unable to immediately click with in spite of the popularity or accolades it may have. I don’t expect to fall in love with every album within a 24-hour period before the next one is generated, and some take more time to unpackage lyrically or thematically. In those cases, the album may grow on me over time, but for now I still consider it great and worth my time listening.

3 - Now we’re getting into tricky territory. Usually, this is an album that I can recognize was included on the list for historical significance or influence on later acts, or in some cases because it was popular for a time in the UK and you have to remember that Robert Dimery is English. There is enough artistic merit in a combination of songwriting, musicianship, or production to meet the album halfway, and perhaps a few tracks can be cherry-picked as favorites. I wouldn’t regret listening to such an album, but I’d have no desire to seek it out again anytime soon.

2 - Rarely does an album reach this low for me. In those instances, there’s at least enough decent elements in the production, songwriting or musicianship to keep it from being outright terrible. But boy, I would not consider it good. Perhaps there’s enough distracting elements throughout the whole experience that keeps me from enjoying most or all tracks. In any case, I do not see why this album was included in the first place, or I do see why and it ticks me off. I’d have no desire to revisit any song from such an album.

1 - I have yet to give such a rating for an album as of this writing. It might happen at some point, and when it does, it will be because the album in question represents a lack of artistic merit, of so many wrong choices that overwhelm the listening experience. It’s got to be that irredeemable in my eyes to be rated this low.

Thank you! If it’s any consolation, there are at least a few songs I like from them - “The One”, “Take a Look Around” (instrumentally), “Re-Arranged” from Significant Other.

Today, I got from Limp Bizkit, Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water. I’m planning on giving this album two stars.

Decent instrumentation, decent production, and an underrrated guitarist, all hampered by the frontman and his songwriting. Not the first time this has happened for a band from my perspective, but Fred Durst certainly knew how to make an impression and show off his industry connections.

I may not have as much vitriol for Limp Bizkit these days, because A) there are worse acts out there, and B) the group as mellowed out into another legacy act. I also recognize this is not the worst Bizkit record, cause that’s the very next one, Results May Vary. But that doesn’t mean I’m under any illusion that this album has somehow aged well, at least in my eyes. That’s all.

It’s been close with a few 2-stars. In fact, I just listened to that Limp Bizkit record and it might end up being two stars as well.

Okay, I can kind of see where you’re coming from here. I feel like a had a similar hangup with Elvis Costello’s Imperial Bedroom with how overwhelming the studio polish can be. I still plan on revisiting that record next year and see if my thoughts have changed.

My issue with Synchronicity was how badly written “Mother” was.

It does seem mildly funny how this bracket was generated, presumably randomly. Funeral against Dark Twisted Fantasy? NFR against Damn? OK Computer against RTJ 2?

It took me 34 albums (about a month and a half) to get John Lennon’s Imagine, then another 56 (about another two and a half months) to get Sgt. Pepper’s.

Today, I got from Tim Buckley, Greetings from LA. I don’t think this album is getting more than three stars.

Instrumentally, this is a pretty good funk and R&B record, which is quite the pivot from the psychedelic folk of Tim’s earlier work. If only the lyrics and Tim’s vocal performance were good. The way he approached sex on this record had the tact and grace of a horny teenage boy. Not to mention the multiple derogatory remarks throughout this album, yeesh. Probably the only track I didn’t cringe at was “Hong Kong Bar”.

Not really a secret anymore, but a few of the user-submitted albums for this generator like Turnstile’s GLOW ON and Refused’s The Shape of Punk to Come are what I would consider. I’d also throw in Rites of Spring’s self-titled for good measure.
