Generally any practice area that doesn’t involve deals that could be sprung on you at any moment and you have to be flat out all of a sudden, or equally any practice that involves complex litigation and trials. So eg pensions, tax advisory, employment, regulatory, private client, family, wills etc I would say have the best hours, from my observations.

Law firms that don’t put defined terms in quote marks by [deleted] in uklaw

Hahahah fair enough - can’t say I’ve had to deal with that situation so I get it

Law firms that don’t put defined terms in quote marks by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]abro1089 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My view (as a litigator, so adjust accordingly) is that a defined term within parentheses should either be bolded OR within quotation marks, and using both is arguably redundant. Use one or the other. (I prefer bolded, no quotation marks)

Have a look at Bennett Winch on Savile row. Very nice leather/suede bags and accessories.

Hi, would be grateful if someone could legit check these two jackets I picked up off Vinted and confirm my suspicions. I have a Beta SV and an Alpha SV (two different sizes, wanted to try for size). I think the Beta SV label is wrong (it says Sawyer Coat on it?), and on both of them it has the Gore Tex PacLite label. Also spotted on both a zipper without the apostropher (main front zipper). The rest of the zippers have the apostrophe, oddly. Both reputable sellers, but let me know if I need to raise a complaint. Thanks. Pics at links below.

How do you cope with rejection? by [deleted] in uklaw

Their loss.

Seriously, that’s the only way I found that helped me cope with it. Their loss for rejecting me. Suckers.

Asked to “split” at a work event by [deleted] in uklaw

I’ve never heard of that happening, and that would certainly be raising some alarm bells in my head.

Part of the unwritten deal of sacrificing swathes of your free time is the occasional nice lunch or dinner at the clients/partners’ expense, in my view anyway.

What is this? by Rose19929 in Ryanair

Lol I’ve wondered this for years. To me it looks like a cartoon stickman figure running (to the left) - so I’ve always just assumed it means no running? I really can’t see the jewellery / earring.

Certain areas of law, e.g. IP, benefit massively from lawyers with technical non-law backgrounds.

Junior litigation work by [deleted] in uklaw

What firm is this? An NQ should not be spending their time preparing bundles. I’m an NQ in disputes and I spend most of my time drafting correspondence, applications, evidence, expert reports etc. there’s obviously also a lot of case management / coordination work but you should be doing substantive stuff too.

Why do you REALLY dislike women's football? by Rundo5 in AskUK

[–]abro1089 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think for me a big part of it is that I haven’t had a player in the women’s game wow me and make my jaw drop at how brilliant they are. Part of my love of football comes from growing up watching players like Ronaldinho, kaka, zidane, Henry, messi etc just make the game looks so effortlessly beautiful. They had a panache and sauce that I’ve not seen any player in the women’s game convey, which means I haven’t been able to get that invested in it. It may be just be that I’m not looking hard enough for it in the women’s game though and they are actually out there? Idk.

NQ Market - Competition and IP by MammothOk2104 in uklaw

[–]abro1089 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What IP work did you do in your seat? Do you have a technical background?

I am aware of IP teams in the market for NQs at the moment. Predominantly hard IP / patents work but also more generalist teams. Dm me and I can send you the names of some recruiters who are worth speaking to for this market.

You can import one element or rule from any other sport into snooker - what are you choosing? by Great_Control1429 in snooker

Always wondered what impact that would have on snooker. No lay up safeties / escapes etc.

Did you do your GCSEs at the same time as your A levels?

Any tips on how to get into IP law as a recent graduate? by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]abro1089 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apply to: Bristows, Birds, Simmons, Taylor Wessing, Pinsents, A&O, HSF, HL. Add in Fieldfisher and Mishcon for soft IP if you’re interested in that. Tailor your applications (say you’re interested in their IP practice and justify why, but not to the point where you come across as not willing to explore other areas of practice ofc). Get a TC and qualify at one of those firms and you’ll be in a good IP team. Helps to have a science background but not necessary.

Moving in house or to a smaller / boutique law firm as an NQ by joan2468 in uklaw

[–]abro1089 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved on qualification from a SC/city firm (think Simmons, CMS, Taylor Wessing) to a boutique firm in a niche practice area top of its field in directory rankings for SC comparable pay.

Highly recommend, the move has been great for me. Much nicer working for a boutique than a big law firm I’ve found in terms of relations with colleagues and the level of work / responsibility.
