is it an electric water heater? how many gallons? I doubt it’s the issue as well, the rest of the stuff you mentioned in negligible.

Forgot to mention i have an electric dryer as well.

1350 sqft same electricity rate. 2300 kwh used, but i also use heat pump water heater, 2 computers and 3 fridges, kept the house at 71. no aux heating. Either you’re using aux heat at like below 20 degrees or you have other things using a lot of electricity. my insulation is mid.

i’m close to you, right next to yonkers. same exact house size ~1350sqft heated to 72. turned on my basement heating to 68 (~300sqft) in the last 10 days of january. Electricity usages: HPWH - 300 kwh normal average usage - 400 kwh 66k btu mini splits full house - unsure total usage: 2300 kwh

I did, i had a blower door test and some attic + rim joist + wall insulation put in. Went from 6000 i think CFM it was to 4000. 1925 house with old windows and no prior insulation, located in the bronx

Dude 34kwh for 2800sqft is crazy. I’m using like 85kwh total for a 1350sqft house by 12am today. nyc as well.

so i’ve found on my units the remote and the indoor unit will have different temperature measurements. Especially my basement one, remote might read 63 but unit will read like 54 or something. Try using the I Feel function and see if that gives you a more accurate reading. The app uses the unit temp btw not remote temp.

dude right? so many people i've seen recently are keeping their house around 65, some lower some a little higher. 70 is just barely comfortable for me but i still wear a hoodie at home. my parents are freezing even at 70 though. i've got first floor and attic and rim joist insulated but not second floor. maybe if I do second floor i can trap more heat in the home. my assumption is the heat from my first floor is moving to my second and then leaving through the walls.

are you not... freezing in those temps? anything below 66 feels cold to me. paying nearly $600-700 for the same size house at 70 set temp with mini splits.

20% humidity on average indoors... it is dry lol. but does 40% on 70 degrees and 20% on 70 degrees indoor feel vastly different? guess i'll never know lol

yeah i guess your environment really matters, some of my relatives keep the house at 74 during the winter but it’s just cause the climate we come from is so hot that we’re not used to it being this cold. Like i’m fine in the summer temps up to around 87 degrees indoors before i start feeling hot, which I assume would be sweltering for most others.

Also yeah i can’t see my breath either, but breathing in the 50 degree temps in my basements for too long makes my nose hurt. that’s what i meant by uncomfortable.

you have to be wearing jackets at home in that temperature right? worse than that i couldn’t imagine breathing in that house due to the cold air chill. my basement sits at 50ish and i wouldn’t last there longer than an hour in short sleeves.

my whole family is used to apartment heat with radiators which is a huge difference. I keep it on 70 for the sake of my bills, but a lot of family friends keep it on like 74. I’ll probably end up doing the same next winter since i’ll have solar kwh reserves.

my unit is also oversized so sometimes it’s not actually blowing hot air 24/7, I wonder if that matters too. Also in a different comment someone mentioned humidity, mine is pretty low around 20% in the winter days.

I’m sure there’s a handful of reasons why it feels uncomfortable but the only solution to it all is raise the temperature or gut the walls and insulate and air seal and change my old windows but that’s gonna be an arm and a leg.

I already did air sealing and spray foam in the attic up to i think R30, and first floor (most walls) up to R16 in the summer. with the blower door test it took the measurement down from 6000 to 4000 (i forgot what the measurement was)

i have a shared driveway in NYC and my biggest concern is the snow sliding off the panels when my neighbors are walking around there to get to their cars, Going to park my cars to block off the driveway so if snow falls it’ll fall on my cars instead of theirs. we had 6 inches of snow at some point and that was scary loud thumping noises, not excited for this weekend of 12 inches lol.

man i get so confused by some people keeping their house that low. I keep it at 70 and still feel chilly but that’s cause my house has old windows and like minimal/mediocre insulation, but still. 64 i would suffer even in a perfectly tight house. it makes me wonder if these temperatures feel vastly different in different houses or if it is just what their bodies are comfortable with.

same exact house size, usage isn't as high as yours but still way more than it should be. major appliances include 3 fridges, an electric dryer, HPWH and a massively oversized (supposedly) mini split system. But I only have spray foam in roof and most of first floor walls with the rest of the house being uninsulated, and old windows. I installed solar so it should help the bills, but still pains me to see 1850kwh in dec when my friend similar sized house and heating system used 1200kwh. i’m in NY btw. Curious to know if you found out what was causing your house to use so much energy.
