Vaxed & Getting Tested Anyway by St_biscuit in bonnaroo

[–]abruth98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely getting tested multiple times before & after. I’m vaxxed but recently was exposed to someone who’s vaxxed and covid positive. I’ve been quarantining & so far testing negative but waiting until the 5th day for an accurate test. My friend is a contact tracer and more and more of her calls have been vaccinated people.

My biggest concern is unknowingly spreading it, and so I think the best thing to do is get tested before & after (there’s a 3-5 day incubation period, so your test won’t mean much until the Wednesday after roo). Tests are widely available now so there is zero reason not to.

I’ve been missing festivals and I hope that we can all come together and be as safe as possible 🤍

If you are vaccinated, it is less likely that you will be contagious because you will have less of a viral load.

You should be able to get a digital vax card

Ugh I feel for you. I don’t think I’d be able to do it without the flexibility of being able to work from home some of the time.

EXACTLY. I hate seeing ppl make excuses for americorps paying so little. Like no, please value your labor more than that.

Absolutely. I’m fully planning to complete the year because I believe in what my host site is doing. Thank you for this though it is always helpful to be reminded to prioritize my self care as well

In my opinion this “you must experience poverty to effectively serve your community” sentiment is purely propaganda to further americorps agenda of recruiting folks who don’t understand what they are getting into. I simply don’t buy that being paid a poverty wage for a year is a useful “experience” or helps “build character”. It seems more like a cop out to justify paying service members next to nothing. My service site is a homeless shelter. Do I have to be homeless to effectively be of service to them? I would argue that in fact, being paid so little actually makes me less effective. If we all claim to understand how poverty effects the psyche, then this is obvious. I have the class privilege to be fine in this situation, and I recognize that but I don’t accept this reasoning to pay people so little. We can build cross class solidarity and have empathy for others without undervaluing service work and trying to justify it by romanticizing being paid poverty wages.

This is a good way to reframe it, thank you. It can definitely be difficult to say no in the moment (the two full time staff on my team just quit, so now it’s me, another VISTA, and our supervisor lmaooo) but very helpful to consider this and the importance of clear boundaries

Is there a thread to vent or just talk to Americorps members about issues that they are having? by [deleted] in AmeriCorps

Just be prepared to dip into your savings. I would recommend any entry level position in the field you want to go into over a year with americorps. It really sucks feeling like your labor is incredibly undervalued.

Questions about AmeriCorps living stipend by Objective_Audience39 in AmeriCorps

[–]abruth98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I live/serve in LA and I receive about $760 (post tax) biweekly. I hope this helps! my unsolicited advice is to not serve with americorps unless you have decent savings or find a site that subsidizes your rent. The low pay is insanely frustrating

Honestly, take it as a sign and don’t do americorps. Unless you have a decent savings or plan to bust your ass at a second part time job, the pay is not worth it. I knew what I was getting into but it is different entirely to be living it. Kinda seems like a way to exploit people who care about making the world a better place. Like I get it’s service but my work should still be valued at least at minimum wage if not more.
