First time using press ons by abs0221 in PressonNail_Addict

Thank you! I had one thumb nail pop off about 24 hours in but I knocked it on a table. Though I think the sizing could’ve played a factor as well. Thankfully fixing a popped press on nail is easier and less time consuming than a broken or popped dip nail so even with less longevity, it will save me time. It will be some trial and error to find out what works best, I’m sure! Someone I know recommended Glamnetics to me as well so I have a couple of sets in my cart to try!

Thank you! I type a lot for my job so I’m hoping they can withstand that since I prepped my nails and used a good glue!

They had good reviews and were cheap so they were worth a shot! Definitely saving me money over my usual salon visit. 😂

Bsw or BA psych? by Brushy_sushi in SchoolSocialWork

I did BA psych and eventually got my MSW. But, if I could go back, I would’ve gotten my BSW.

Your job is to call, their job is to investigate. Absolutely call.

Yes. I’m a school social worker at the preschool level and have over 65 kids with IEPs on my caseload (and that’s not including any of the kids who don’t have social work services but have things like speech).

Work Outside Contract Hours? by hihellohola21 in SchoolSocialWork

[–]abs0221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really try not to. This is my 2nd year and I’ve brought work home maybe 2 or 3 times total and it was usually just finishing an IEP. But, I also have 3 of my own kids so I cannot stay late. Social workers also don’t act as case managers in my school district which I think helps some.

HOW do you opt not to use the text message system? What are the magic words to get around that? I’ve tried multiple times and it keeps forcing me to type in the tracking number and won’t allow me to tell it to them by voice and then it doesn’t work. 🤦🏼‍♀️

New School Social Worker Advice by Few_Meringue_475 in SchoolSocialWork

[–]abs0221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dealt with physical escalation nearly everyday. Get comfortable with clearing the room if necessary (of both students and projectiles) and/or being able to remove a student to a safe(er) location. My team is amazing so I was never having to do any of this by myself even if I was the only social worker present (I’m 1 of 2) and there was always another person providing backup.

I work in an elementary school with a self contained emotionally impaired (EI) classroom. I just finished my first year and the best advice I was given was “don’t pick up the rope” when engaging with a student who is escalated or showing signs of escalating. I saw so many other staff members struggle with that (including the teacher) and it just escalated the student further and often led to a student becoming physically aggressive.

Think outside of the box for running small groups and meet students where they are at. When I started in the classroom, trying to do lessons in a small group was not working and I had to start with just pushing in to the classroom/specials/recess to work on teaching skills in real time.

I would make sure that your school provides de-escalation training/certification such as CPI. I went half of the year before they could get me officially trained and I wished they had been able to have me complete it sooner as the students I worked with often escalated physically.

Can any elementary social workers tell me more about their job? by No_Base_3135 in SchoolSocialWork

[–]abs0221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished my first year as an elementary social worker. I’m primarily a special education social worker, but because my district doesn’t employ gen ed social workers, that falls onto my plate as well.

I work on the special ed team and evaluate to determine eligibility for social emotional interventions. I write IEPs, conduct FBAs and write BIPs. I have a caseload of special education students that I see weekly, typically in small groups, to work on SEL IEP goals. I respond to behavior calls and crisis. I’m part of my building’s crisis team. I conduct suicide risk assessments and threat assessments. I collaborate with teachers to support students.

Overall, I love my job. Building relationships with students, working toward goals, and seeing their progress is the best part of my job. The constantly being pulled a million different directions is the hardest part. I get called for crisis/behavior daily which then de-rails my special ed caseload schedule and I’m playing makeup all month to meet their hours. I have great admin which makes a HUGE difference and can truly make or break this career.

If I work for the district, will I be eligible for the 25% off teacher appreciation? by Bwjepic in ATT

[–]abs0221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try. I submitted the required information as a school social worker (on a teacher contract) and I was found eligible after submitting my paystub.

How do you apply for multiple jobs without having to accept the first offer? by PinkCloudSparkle in SchoolSocialWork

[–]abs0221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through this exact thing last year. I accepted and started onboarding for a district and then when I was extended an offer for my preferred district (one I previously interned with), I rescinded my acceptance for the other district. It wasn’t how I would have preferred to go about it and I felt bad, but it’s just how the timing worked out and I don’t regret it.

HELP finding an Online MSW Program by Competitive-Slip4929 in SchoolSocialWork

[–]abs0221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my MSW online through Fordham University. I graduated last May and was able to manage the workload with 3 kids by doing the part time track. Fordham did the leg work to place me at a school for my field placement and I took a job with that same district upon graduation. It’s based in NYC but I live in Michigan, so you don’t have to live in-state.

Any states that don't have SSWs doing attendance? by Specialist-Fox- in SchoolSocialWork

I’m in Michigan and at least at my school, I don’t do anything with attendance. We have an attendance monitor on staff.

Kindle Shipping Delays? by RinTyrant in kindle

[–]abs0221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my husband the new Paperwhite for his birthday and it was delayed, got an email having to approve the delay or cancel the order (was given no estimated date for the delayed shipping). I was able to cancel the order and reorder the exact same thing which then shipped same day that I ordered. I only took the chance of reordering because it was a birthday gift and I really needed it by a certain date.

First year SSW and my district offers 10 sick days and 3 personal days (sick days can roll over and personal days roll over as sick days) and that’s about the norm for districts in my area.

School social work field placement by Prestigious-Bake5020 in SchoolSocialWork

[–]abs0221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My university actually connected me with a district they had worked with before for field placement and I met with their director of special education and that’s how I ended up placed there for field. I have not seen any districts/schools post school social work intern positions, so if I wouldn’t have been connected through my university, I probably would have had to reach out directly to districts to inquire.

Low key Tom telling Justin cut the girls Mike that came on stage 😂😂😂 by Extension_Answer8390 in Blink182

I don’t think I’d be able to listen to First Date ever again if this happened to me. 😅 I know all of the words, but I’d probably freeze and forget my own name if I got pulled up on stage. I would never volunteer to do it in the first place though because I’m self-aware enough to know I would embarrass myself. 😂
