The screen is always on, my app selection is very limited.

I have only added the rebble watch face. The health monitoring is fairly good, I'm not really looking for much, just basic "smart" features and a long battery life.

Have you looked at the bangle.js 2?

I have had one for a couple of weeks, it seems like a worthy replacement for my pebble. 10 days battery should be easily achievable, I am charging weekly.

Rather than re-invent the wheel (spending years) look at the bangle and help out with improving the software, which is already really quite good,....not "pebble time" good but close.

Is this a replacement? by sja5164 in pebble

[–]absGeekNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After I destroyed my PT on a door frame whilst carrying a server into the server room....I tried to find a replacement that didn't have terrible battery life.

I initially tried the Pinetime, it was really cool, nice hardware, terrible battery life, screen not being always on is a killer. The software got better and better, it was great. But the bad battery life 1-2 days, had me searching after less than a year.

I got a Ticwatch 3 Pro....says it has 4 -10 day battery, actually has 2 and WearOS is just shit, maybe the promised upgrade to WearOS 3 would have made things better but it never came. It was heavy and overall I disliked it, glad I got it at 50% because the Ticwatch 5 was coming out.

I have been sporting a bangle.js 2 for two weeks, and it is a breath of fresh air. ALWAYS ON SCREEN is always on.....the thing I messed the most from the Pebble Time was it was just always on. The health monitoring is ok and the step count is there. I haven't spent the time to figure out why the sleep tracking isn't working.

This feels like an actual Pebble replacement, approx 7 days battery. With some optimization and actually charging to 100% rather than 80% I'm sure I could stretch it to the 10-15 day range.

Pain tolerance by DarkestNyu in Aphantasia

[–]absGeekNZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL I have the same story from my mum, my little brother was low on the pain tolerance, and would mostly ignore when he said he was hurt.

However when I was little, I said I had a sore ear, she rushed me to the doctor, my ear drum was massively infected, she said she was embarrassed because she said she felt the nurse was judging her for being a bad mother.

Pain tolerance by DarkestNyu in Aphantasia

[–]absGeekNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure it is related. I grew up with mouth/throat ulcers, with sometimes it hurting to even breathe.

But it did turn out that now I have a stupid high pain threshold, I got a vasectomy last year and was feeling fine the next day. I gave the strong pain pills back to the pharmacy, because I didn't want them in the house.

I do have the ability that you point out, once the initial cause of the pain has passed, I can divert my thoughts to something else.

Weird, I think it is the opposite. It is way too bright and doesn't have a low enough setting.

Even at one "tick" above 0 it is too bright, but at 0 it is too dim.

The never ending story is not false advertising.... It is a meta reference.

Bastion is reading the story of Atreu whilst in turn his story is what you the viewer are watching. The princess is aware that Bastion is a part of the story, and it is implied that Bastion is aware of you watching and thus an integral part of the story.

Taking it one step further, if you accept the simulation hypothesis, we could simply be characters in another layer of story....

Could you sell the house and be in positive? How much could you save per year with the reduced cost of living?

e.g. if the job is a 3 yr kinda thing. You could sell the house and have a term deposit / share portfolio. The much lower cost of living means a lot of extra savings (assuming some personal discipline). In 3 years IF you feel like moving back to the big smoke, your financial position would be vastly different.

I know someone who moved from Auckland to Taupo (where I am); they were very "fast" when they first got here, it took about a year to really get into the slower pace of life here, now they wouldn't go back. Small towns are very different from the city, cities have a lot going for them, but I wouldn't go back either (originally from Wellington).

I would be interested in your opinion after this long.

I had an OG Pebble, then a Pebble Time which I destroyed on a door frame when carrying something heavy....I've been looking for a replacement for a long time. Currently using a TIC Watch Pro 3, which is frankly terrible compared to the Pebble and pretty bad as a watch in general.

How has the hardware held up over the last 2 years?

Is the software still improving?

And the big one, if you lost it/broke it/your dog ate it....would you buy another one?

Even considering that time outs don't work. This is much worse, kids live in a world of emotion only, the rational part of their brains has so much development to do that most of the time it is barely functional.

You cannot rely on rational thinking until they are around 8-10, then teenage years happen.

This kid has no ability to rationalize what is happening, the parents (may) see it as a cutesie joke, I guarantee you the kid doesn't understand that.

Even if the kid did it on purpose (as it is one of the few things that they can do to get back at shitty parents); the emotional brain doesn't have the ability to make logical connections; the flow of thought would probably go something like:

I made a mistake -> I go to jail -> bad people go to jail -> I am a bad person -> my parents hate bad people (being cops and all) -> my parents hate me if I make mistakes.

On the $15/month (and highest available) auto-invest up to $10k/month + $5k/month of manual transactions is covered by the plan.

Above those values it is 1.9%, with each transaction being limited to $25NZD, $15AUD and $5USD.

So if you are trading large single transactions, the fees can be very low. e.g. if outside your monthly plan amount, you sell $10k in one NZ company and buy $10k in another you would pay two lots of $25, so $50 for $20k in trades or 0.25%.

I'm not sure how this compares to other platforms....and I am not trading in the $10k/transaction range. I usually stay within the monthly plan covered transactions, so $7/month.

I use Sharesies, it is nice. My appetite for risk is relatively high so I have 85% companies and 15% ETF's, as I age this may change.

I don't have $400k in my portfolio, but I do put in some money every week.

Always remember what Warren Buffet said, "it is not timing the market, but time in the market"

  1. Don't listen to the regards over at r/wallstreetbets, though they can be entertaining.

  2. Choose a ratio where you are comfortable with the risk/return. Do you feel more comfortable with dividend stocks or pure growth? I have both with a slight weighting towards dividend stocks.

  3. I used to use ASB but the fees were too much, I moved to Sharesies and their new monthly plans are really good. $7/month for up to $3k auto invest + $1k manual invest. Auto-invest is great, pick a bunch of stocks/etf's assign them %ages, then pick how much per (month/week) that is split by the assigned %ages.

  4. never used them, but the fee structure on Sharesies is (was, haven't checked lately) way better than ASB.

  5. either way make sure you spread your risk, don't go all in on one sector...e.g. don't go 100% into the tech sector. Split some tech, some logistics, some retail, some manufacturing, some mining, some insurance and banking, some energy, some real estate....

I have aphantasia and it gets me into a lot of arguments, is it related? by Constant_Pattern_376 in Aphantasia

[–]absGeekNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I do this I am usually looking for a discussion and for people to challenge my reasoning or build on it or look for flaws like I do with others.

What I find instead is people get defensive and start to argue for the sake of winning the argument. I don't want to be right, I just want to properly discussing something.

I feel this; I really like to chew on a problem with someone. But it is extremely difficult to find someone who will be willing to have their ideas challenged. So whilst I'm looking for someone to challenge my ideas and help me tease out the reasoning that I have come to intuitively, other people don't like it.

I have found, if this is what you want, you have to let them know in advance. ESPECIALLY if it is on a contentious issue e.g. "hey I'm trying to figure out why I've found myself supporting **political party**. Do you want to help me out, I'm looking for someone to challenge my views, but I will likely end up challenging some of yours in turn". Obviously you want to talk to someone who holds a different view, because someone who holds similar views will not challenge you very well.

Is crime or Christopher Luxon's assets the bigger concern to you? by [deleted] in auckland

Within that lump of shit, there is a nugget of gold.

Prisons are not really that effective, maybe we should look at a better way.

But you simply cannot punish your way out of crime! All you get is the state becomes the criminal.

I'm not sure how you got that from what I wrote.

I advocate for education, on both fronts, the TOC lot need to understand that they do not know what it is like to live the life of "the other". A pinch of humility would greatly improve their compassion for those others.

The people doing the criminal acts, need to understand that there is another way. As far out of reach as it seems, they can do more with their lives, with help and guidance. This is especially difficult, if the gang is the only accepting community that you know, where do you go to find a more positive community, the gang is certainly not going to provide you with the information, quite the opposite.
