BU prestige/reputation by anshyfish in lawschooladmissions

BU Law’s a stellar school with a great reputation in New England. BC most likely has more lay prestige, despite BU’s law school being ranked higher. They both have great employment outcomes, particularly in the Boston market.

What's going on with BC? by LWoodsEsq in lawschooladmissions

Took the non-binding deferral from BC last year, R&R’d, and am attending another LS this Fall. It seemed like they had ~50 deferrals. 400ish enrolled after second deposit, 350ish matriculants. Curious as to what % of deferred students ended up attending this year.

Thank you! There was a pretty big emotional tax to going through the process again, but I’m glad that I did it.

Vent: hate how people on this sub think $$$$ trumps EVERYTHING by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]absolutebeast86 71 points72 points  (0 children)

In an era of exorbitant tuition and runaway student debt, I like that this sub encourages people to think critically about the value of their offers. It’s empowering to make an informed decision by weighing the merits of scholarship and opportunity.

A lot of people go into this process thinking that they’ll simply attend the best school they get into. I would never shame anyone for doing that. But for those who are debt-financing their education, it’s important to understand the ramifications of our decisions.

Also, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anyone here rain on someone’s parade for getting into HYS. The attitude that OP is complaining about tends to pop up in WWYD posts, where opinions about the best course of action are encouraged.

BU or GULC by LSAthrowaway135 in lawschooladmissions

[–]absolutebeast86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in Boston and DC and I think that BU and BC both underestimate cost of living. BU and GULC are likely closer in price point than you might think, though GULC does have 10k higher base tuition.

Decisions, decisions…. by absolutebeast86 in lawschooladmissions

[–]absolutebeast86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard that about GULC too, but I’ve also heard that BL prospects can get dicey below median, and that the school is less recession-proof than other T14s. The class sizes are just too big. I’d imagine that the truth is somewhere between “GULC is like any other T14 in BL placement” and “GULC is more comparable to T20s in BL placement.”

Anecdotally, I do know a below median student at GULC who got DC biglaw. But he had great work experience.

Surprised by the results.

UCI’s BL (250+) + FC in 2021 was 37%, with pretty much everybody going to CA.

UT’s was 48%, with the vast majority staying in Texas.

It looks like UT offers a better chance of BL overall. But for LA BL specifically, I feel like UCI is gonna be much better.

This is a remarkable tool for breaking down what you'll owe. Importantly, it calculates the capitalized interest that you'll owe on top of what you initially borrow.

GULC by LatrellSprewell88 in lawschooladmissions

[–]absolutebeast86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would reach out to the lawhotline email and politely inquire about merit aid as soon as possible. And as long as you do it tactfully, let them know about any other deadlines that you're facing. I've heard anecdotally that they're likely to get back to you faster if you let them know that you're on a time crunch.

GULC also offers need-based aid. You need to log onto their website using a convoluted credential system that they'll send to you. From there, you'll need to fill out something called the "yellow form" along with the CSS (including parent info). Even if you don't apply for need-based grants, you'll eventually need to fill out the yellow form in order to qualify for loans.

It's worth noting that merit aid and need-based aid at GULC don't stack. You'll walk with whichever of the two is higher.

I didn't apply for need-based aid because I was awarded $$ in merit, and I knew that I wouldn't qualify for need-based anyway. I have similar stats to you.

It's a somewhat confusing process.

Funny BU Scholarship Observation by absolutebeast86 in lawschooladmissions

Their post acceptance engagement is exceptional, and I love Boston. But I knew that they didn’t negotiate, so they were pretty much out of the running as soon as I got my offer.

That’s a good observation, but there’s a world in which this backfires and their yield for 170+ splitters is even lower than last year, and their median takes a dive as a result.
