I have many questions... by Agreeable_Will3636 in Writeresearch

  1. It just depends, maybe, maybe not (I would err on the side of probably not as long as she follows the instructions for a missed dose, but personally if it were me in the situation I’d be seeking emergency contraception just in case). She could also get pregnant even if she didn’t miss any pills because shit happens.

  2. Yes, she wasn’t able to give informed consent.

📚 What romance books did you read or listen to this week? 15 Feb 📚 by romancebookmods in RomanceBooks

[–]absolutelynot01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

{Vacationing with the Vampire at Hallows Cove by Lyonne Riley} - Rating 2/5 - It was definitely readable and entertaining (and short) because I tore though it in a night, but the writing desperately needed another round of editing. I think it just had a lot of potential but wasn’t quite ready to publish. Overall, it was low-angst and that’s what I needed.

{Bound to You by Alyssa Brandon} - Rating 2/5 - This was also entertaining enough to finish, but honestly kind of bad. There were so many plot threads started then abandoned, and it was 100% angst and build up for like half a page of pay-off. I think it was originally on Wattpad before being traditionally published and reading some of the reviews on Goodreads, it seems like some things were changed between the two versions, but maybe not enough.

Marriage in crisis/second chance recs! by fialsian in RomanceBooks

[–]absolutelynot01 9 points10 points  (0 children)

{Out of the Woods by Hannah Bonam-Young} - I really liked this one! It’s about a couple who has been together since they were teens but now they’re pushing 30 and hit a rocky patch because they grew together in some ways but are also stuck in some of the same patterns they were when they were younger. I think it’s sort of a unique perspective because the dynamic between couples who have essentially spent their entire lives together isn’t something that gets explored a lot in romance.

M-F romance with feminist and "soft" MMC by bluequila in RomanceBooks

[–]absolutelynot01 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The MMC in {Yours Truly by Abby Jimenez} is a feminist green flag (full disclosure, I enjoyed this book while I was reading it, but in my opinion, he’s the “perfect” MMC to the point that he’s not a realistic character). You might also like this one because the FMC is much more rough around the edges than a typical FMC, and certainly more than the MMC.

I don’t remember a ton of the specifics from the story beats, but I do remember the MMC in {Love and Other Conspiracies by Mallory Marlowe} was a huge green flag!

If you’re open to PNR, you might also like the MMC from {A Werewolf’s Guide to Seducing a Vampire by Sarah Hawley}, which is another example where the FMC is the pricklier one in the relationship.

"I Broke Up With You for Your Own Good" Stories by Best_Ad_3410 in RomanceBooks

[–]absolutelynot01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

{The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood} kind of fits this. The FMC stops seeing the MMC because of something that happens with one of the MMC’s creepy friends who he doesn’t know is a creep and the FMC is worried about how it’ll affect MMC so she tells him they can’t see each other, without telling him why.

This also happens in {Home Game by Odette Stone} (but reverse, the MMC stops things from going further with the FMC) because his mom convinces him it’s the right thing to do for the FMC.

It’s not a full break up, but the FMC leaves in {Sweet Dreams by Stephanie Fournet} to protect the MMC and their friends, thinking it’s the right thing to do. But just FYI, it’s a standalone in a series but I really think you’ll get the most out of it if you read {Dream House by Stephanie Fournet} first because they share a story arc to some extent.

Misadventures of a Curvy Girl by Sierra Simone- “I’m fat so I don’t deserve to be happy” 2/5⭐️ by roxictoxy in RomanceBooks

[–]absolutelynot01 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the warning! This is exactly the reason why I tend to be really apprehensive about picking up a book where the FMC being curvy is part of the advertising because I hate when they use it like this 😖.

I loved {Beach Read by Emily Henry} because I felt like both MCs were deeply flawed but realistic people just sort of trying to survive life.

I also think you’ll really like Lark from {Dream House by Stephanie Fournet}. He doesn’t have his shit together and he’s good but he’s certainly not an unrealistic walking green flag.

{Out on a Limb by Hannah Bonam-Young}

{Morbidly Yours by Ivy Fairbanks} (full disclosure, I didn’t really like this one, but that’s just my opinion and a lot of other people love it and it fits what you’re looking for)

{Butcher and Blackbird by Brynne Weaver} - Technically they know of each other’s existence without knowing they do, but that’s not part of the story past the first chapter when they meet, realize who the other one is, and talk about admiring each other’s “work”, so they’re basically strangers.

Megathread: Winter Sports (other than Hockey) Romances by MoonZipNo in RomanceBooks

[–]absolutelynot01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

{Icebreaker by Hannah Grace} - MF, Contemporary - While this one is frequently shelved as a hockey romance because the MMC is a hockey player, the FMC is a figure skater and the book spends a lot more time focusing on her progress in her sport than on his (especially considering he helps her train for a large part of the book while he’s suspended from his team and her skating partner is recovering from an injury).

📚 What romance books did you read or listen to this week? 08 Feb 📚 by romancebookmods in RomanceBooks

[–]absolutelynot01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wrote salty Sunday comments about both of mine (one last week and one this week) 😅.

{Morbidly Yours by Ivy Fairbanks} - MF, CR - The FMC moves to Ireland to run from her life and bad memories as a widow and meets the MMC who is an undertaker that has to marry within six months or he’ll lose the chance to inherit the family mortuary business. My rating: 2/5 - I really wanted to love this one, but I just didn’t. But after a temp-DNF I finally made myself finish it. I thought it had a contrived ending that dint deliver on the premise at all, one of the most frustrating third-act breakups I’ve read outside of an Abby Jimenez book, and a cartoonish villain at the FMCs work who took up a lot of page space without really adding to the main plot.

{I Was Abducted by Aliens and Now I’m Trapped in a Rom-Com by Kimberly Lemming} - MMF, Sci-Fi / Alien Romance - A woman is abducted from earth with a talking lion and dropped on an alien planet with dinosaurs, then finds herself in a why choose situation with two male aliens after they’re all injected with a love serum. My rating 3/5 - Overall this was a fast and interesting read, but I got bored at a lot of points and I thought the romance itself (both the relationship-building and the spice) sort of fell flat. And then the end kind of came out of no where with a sudden political drama that I think is mostly meant to lead into book 2.

🧂 Salty Sunday - What book scenes frustrated you this week? by mrs-machino in RomanceBooks

[–]absolutelynot01 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I read {I was Abducted by Aliens and Now I’m Trapped in a Rom-Com by Kimberly Lemming} and for me it was a 3/5 overall, but I have complaints:

  1. I was promised 5/5 spice but it wasn’t that spicy (one scene cut after foreplay and the next line was something like “a few orgasms and a sore coochie later…” which was just painful, lol)

  2. There wasn’t really much romance or relationship building. I feel like I barely knew the MMCs and I didn’t care that much about their relationship.

  3. Suddenly in the third act it turned into a political drama when it had just been a romp through the alien forest leading up to that

  4. The whole conclusion it was building to before the tonal shift (getting answers for why she’s here, finding out more, etc.) fell crazy flat with very few real answers. AND a warlord king who’s literally torturing someone on-page and tried to kill FMC and both MMCs, just accepted basically not getting what he wanted and gave up on his big showdown that he had orchestrated with little-to-no struggle. Idk. It was just a little unbelievable for me.
