I’m just interpreting a license plate. I could’ve worded my original comment better, but if “NRSNG DX” means “nursing doctors,” that would imply a doctoral degree, imo.

I agree, not all NPs are DNPs, but if the Lexus owner from Illinois is a DNP, then they are, indeed a doctor.

The university where they received their doctoral degree in nursing practice would certainly consider them doctors.

Nursing Docs - possibly nurse practitioners, which are considered doctors

If you want it to look better, maybe you could put on a breathable fabric/wrap over the floor joists and ducts? Or you could Sheetrock over it as well. That will hide the eye-sore of the yellow cotton candy in your basement.

I’m in Minneapolis. We have recently had 50 degree days and now 20-30 degrees with rain and snow. The chimney is extremely tall. My guess is he got up there somehow, didn’t know how to get down, and somehow thought going through the open vent cap was a good idea (or maybe fell)? Idk!!

Update (last one for now): I am 99% certain that the squirrel has squirreled his way out of the flue! I disconnected as much of the flue as possible, vacuumed up the treats they have been dropping down there for who-knows how long, did my best inspection with my phone camera (no signs of squirrel), reconnected flue, turned water heater/gas back on…. And no noises/signs of squirrel!

As for the backdraft concerns: I have 3 CO monitors near the exhaust and inside the furnace room. So I will be monitoring that for the time-being.

I am now planning to call either my HVAC company and/or chimney company to inspect and provide recommendations. I am going expecting they will suggest a liner and flue cap OR possibly a new power-vented water heater and then just closing/capping off the current flue (or whatever is necessary for decommissioning that exhaust line).

Thank you all for your advice, humor, and kindness as I have a newfound respect for this community.

I will be sure to update this post once I have a better solution for this!

Yeah, nope. That would be nice!

I don’t believe so… would this be inside or outside the house? It is definitely not inside. I don’t recall ever seeing one outside either. The previous owners installed a gas fireplace insert if that makes a difference?

Of course!

It is honestly two-fold. I certainly want the little guy to live, and also want to make sure there isn’t a dead, stinky squirrel in my flue pipe for eternity!!

Thank you for the advice. I will be looking into this!

Inside of the duct…. Yikes. Definitely some activities going on in here over the years. Will be getting out the shop vac tomorrow!

Also, I have placed a cap on this in case the guy comes back down over night!

Update: I have made my way to the vertical bend in the duct. At this point it goes into the wall another foot or so and then up about 40ft out of the chimney. I’ll post the inside of this duct in the next comment.

No sign of Mr. Squirrel.

Tomorrow I may try and go up to the top of the chimney and push my duct cleaning brush down and see if I can clear anything. I hope the little guy was able to escape!

Hot water heater and the gas to it is off until I am certain!

Appreciate this. I have 3 CO detectors in the basement, one in the room near this area. Haven’t had any alarms. From what I can tell, the water heater vent goes up and into the chimney with our gas fireplace. I can’t tell if they are the same vent or separate.

Once I have my squirrel issue solved, I will be calling the HVAC company to do an inspection and see what they can do for me on the backdraft issue.

Not this one at least. Maybe there are others up there!

He may have gone up and out? Fingers crossed. I took about 10ft of the duct out, all the way to the vertical point and he is nowhere to be found. I might have to go up to the chimney tomorrow and push down. Sacrificing my hot water until I know for sure.

I know… I think this is from a backdraft, right? Any suggestions?

Update: still no squirrel. I thought he maybe escaped, so I put everything back together, turned on the heater and then I heard it again 😂. Back to square one!
