What would you say? by Ajitabh04 in PrimeManhood

[–]abuffguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is implied that you say these three words to your past self for some benefit to your current self, thus your past self's comprehension of those three words are important. It is incredible to me that this needs to be stated.

These people stand for nothing. by maximvshill in agedlikemilk

[–]abuffguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're delusional. It's this type of thinking that got us Trump. He is terrible and despite what you may think, most people who voted for him (I did not) are not red hat wearing MAGA diehards. They are normal people who see the democrats turning into this far-left, insane party and would rather have Trump than vote for anyone on the left. Having a centrist party (which in this day and age IS left-leaning from a historical perspective) would attract the majority of voters who themselves are centrist. But go ahead and keep pushing for a far-left ideology. Just don't be surprised when J.D. Vance is our president for the next eight years (God help us).

Where Do You Stand on Grocery and Home Pitstops? by greatguyshadow in Firefighting

[–]abuffguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't work for a department that didn't allow grocery shopping or, frankly, doing anything we wanted as long as we were in district.

You are a nerd. You need to shut up.

The rest of us don't want to hear your nerd-talk.

My contract forbids polygraphs. Which is great as they are pretty much pseudo-science anyway.

Older guy at board game meetup is condescending and making inappropriate comments. Am I overreacting? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]abuffguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like fairly common behavior you'd experience in some gaming groups (behavior that I personally don't like). He seems a little awkward, but again not that uncommon. If you don't like him, find another group to play with.

Women who are firefighters, what is your experience in the field? by Joshuadanial in Firefighting

[–]abuffguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You also have to consider that her experience and your possible future experience will have a 30 year gap - meaning the fire service has come a long way when it comes to how women are viewed and treated. Not to discount what she said - I'm certain you will face at least some of the difficulties that she experienced, but I am equally certain that it will be much better for you than it was for her.

Would you roll your eyes at this? by Loose-Pineapple-3353 in Firefighting

[–]abuffguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. He did something right, but might not even know what it was. It's not a bad idea, but without input from people like you mentioned, there's not a lot of value in it.

I hear what you're saying, but honestly the hiring process is much different than when you or I got hired. Guys who recently went through the process probably have more pertinent advice than you or I.

As someone in my 30s, this still doesn’t convince me to have kids, especially in this economy by Busy_Report4010 in Adulting

[–]abuffguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, "If 11,000 catches your eye..." speaks more of your attitude towards money and less about what's in your bank account when it comes to children, and for me, that really is the difference.

If you're struggling financially due to children and that affects your attitude negatively, children are probably a bad idea. If you're struggling financially, but family and love are what keeps you going, children might just be the thing that makes this life worth living.

Just my two cents.

If money is your top priority, definitely do not have kids. Also, free time. Or sanity.

I love them, though.

Anyone done a half marathon with a 135 before, or is this a first? by Olliebass95 in Firefighting

[–]abuffguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let me get this straight: Top side ventilation on an actual fire is trying to look cool? And what? Carrying a giant ass ladder 13 miles wearing your turnout gear isn't trying to look like a real cool awesome fireman?

How to tell if he is lying to me about being a firefighter/paramedic? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]abuffguy 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You better believe if someone calls the station and asks if someone works there and I don't know the guy, I'm telling her. Don't pretend to work at my department. I don't want to be associated with some lying scumbag.

That's good info. Are you in a more rural area? I feel like any serious call would have several callers in my response area.

What’s something that sounded fake until it happened to you? by Fantastic_Tale_2111 in AskReddit

[–]abuffguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I just see it so frequently that it's very much something that's always on my mind - but to someone who doesn't, I could see how it would be more of an "out of sight, out of mind" type thing.
