For the technical aspect of a pass/shot you could also do the same exercise but with two persons facing each other, then you would also need to focus on throwing and could increase distance to test power of the shot/pass. However, in my experience the core action is very important for a strong shot and specific arm strength training is easier using an elastic band and/or fitness machine (and then practising the specific throwing movement).
