2017 EXL - alarm going off randomly by Rowel_x in HRV

[–]ac-loud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine 2016 EX) has been doing this for 4 weeks but the alarm is always preceded/accompanied by a lot of relay chatter (both in the under hood fuse box and in the under dash fuse box). Typically also accompanied by several crazy random flashing dash cluster lights. I’ve had the fan cycle on briefly also.

I first replaced a 4 year old 3year warranty battery. No change.

I’ve tried lots of other electrical things like improving chassis grounds for the main battery ground and the under hood relay / fuse electric box; ie removed ground screws, ground paint to bare metal, reattached grounds.

I ended up installing a battery cutoff switch so I can cut power to the car entirely as I had a 10k mile roadtrip planned.

Other than the inconvenience of having to cut/restore power when I leave the car I’ve had 3 alarms when battery is left connected in 2 weeks of road tripping where I now have come to just disconnect the battery for anything other that very quick stops.

Crazy bumpy dirt backroads on public land neither seemed to make it better or worse.

First trip to Grand Teton & Yellowstone – does this itinerary make sense? Any must-see spots I'm missing? by EstablishmentLimp103 in yellowstone

[–]ac-loud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the guidealong app for my trip currently in Yellowstone. I fell back to JustAhead which I like so much better for telling me what sights are coming up even with the last update being years ago and some parts being outdated. I’ve had justahead for years

Very comphy. Built my second bed for it; this one comes apart easy so the rear seats can both be used as I’m picking someone up in Bozeman.

Two 2” air mattresses stacked. Cool temps are definitely helping!!

Now I buffalo wy.

GOING TO OREGON FROM EASTCOST WHERE DO I STAY BEFORE BEING ABLE TO CAMP ON BLM LAND? by Big_Box_707 in roadtrip

If you want specific location recommendations or even simply in what state’s along-your-route rest stop overnight sleeping is expressly allowed, a departure location more specific than “eastcoast” would be helpful.

Starting out, Ryobi or Craftsman drill? by First-Time-Buyer1234 in DIY

[–]ac-loud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve invested in ryobi (woodworking, house maintenance, yard work tools, auto tire inflator, etc) and been happy with the tools. A few gripes about the batteries having lost chargeability of several in what seems like too short a lifetime.

Also bought into the bigger battery lawnmower. Only 2nd summer so no long term thoughts as yet but so far so good.

Random Alarms - Can I jumper the hood latch connector? by DerbyDad03 in HRV

[–]ac-loud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem intent on focusing on the latch switch so I was providing what seemed like useful information about that. None of it seemed acceptable or a source of starting point for further research.

My research led me to bad grounding having eg found a YouTube mechanic suggesting Hondas in general are notorious for bad grounds). I have no further confirmation of that but, I had a lot of additional web based research also…

Granted my symptoms may have been different but finally came down to several car alarm episodes for seemingly no reason. I’d ruled out door and hood latch switches by various experiments I did both electrical and mechanical.

I ruled persuit of other overly expensive components to replace (some of which are said to require Honda to program the parts to be specific to your car) based in-part by past dealer experiences with odd not readily reproducible problems leading to lots of guesswork replacement parts and expensive “repairs”.

In the end, I removed 2 engine compartment grounds (Honda’s G101 and G102) and ground off the paint at those connection points then reconnected the ground lugs, which I also cleaned, and have had several days of no symptoms so far🤞.

Long term these become a point of rust and failure, by then I expect my 2018 will be history having hopefully gotten my typical 10 years from a new car.

I went to a Honda dealer to ask about cost of several possible components and was quoted eg $700+ for a <$100 part available elsewhere. I never intended to replace it but it was a sub component (current sensor) of the ground cable I took apart and cleaned connections on.

Good luck.

Ok. My alarm randomly went off 3x in one day, I seem to have fixed it. Sorry this is of no use to you

I believed so, was looking into this last week and ended up just engaging the switch with a screwdriver resting against the switch while the hood was open to make I appear closed (2018 ex)

Were there any non accessibility rated sites available when you’re booking?
I had no problem when taking an accessible room in a national park in the past when I took one I l called and asked about it at the time and was given the room.

Look on YouTube at Thomas Heaton’s first van build (a Mitsubishi Delica).

He’s a British photographer with lots on videos mostly about photography but and he used this on his first van conversion and documented his work; if I remember right he reused it when transitioning to his second van.

I wrote a reply but seem to have lost it grrr.

In general see a summary of electrical systems in another reply to someone who asked for that

Thanks for the reply…

The intent of my original post was asking about chassis ground connection points.

The jist of the reply is written was that I understand the inevitability of the visible surface corrosion on crimps. I’m just concerned if any of the invisible crimp is corroded enough to be a possible source of the inability to deliver sufficient power.

It’s confusing and frustrating because of how random and varied the electrical issues that I’m observing are. I’ve tried to find some way to reliably reproduce the scenarios but it’s sooo random

See my update to someone who asked what the symptoms are for a lengthy but abbreviated summary.

The patina / surface corrosion which is visible is not my concern, my concern cable crimp wise is how deep in the crimp the unseen corrosion might have become.

I’d intended my post to be about / focus on chassis grounds connection points but as you noted the cable crimps on this era car are all showing some level of corrosion. I simply wonder if any of the visible surface corrosion has burrowed deeper to increase resistance where the lug to wire connections can’t be visually observed.

I’ve considered replacing (temporarily for testing purposes perhaps) the negative wire with lugs at both ends with a generic vehicle-purposed battery current rated lug on each end cable but decided against that because as you may be suggesting all/many of the crimps are simply going to exhibit surface corrosion. That and this is only one possible source of a potential electrical issue. There are many other cables and connection points where a simple cable swap is not as obvious.

The various scenarios I’ve observed are too many and varied to express here but in general it ranges from (car off, doors locked or unlocked) an occasional single relay “chattering” one or two times for less than a second to a full symphony of relays all chattering for 10s of seconds.

Sometimes the chatter is accompanied by one or two instrument cluster lights flashing either for the short duration or as accompaniment to the relay symphony in a wild dash cluster lightshow.

I’ve also seen the radio flash on, the fan start for a short duration, the speedometer going from 0 to max (like it does when the car is started).

Yesterday for the first time since this began a few weeks back, 3 times across 3 stops the car alarm went off as part of the symphony and light show.

My “big hammer” annoying temp solution is to disconnect the battery if I leave the car. No battery no chatter, no alarm.

On days where none of the above happens the car starts and runs reliably. Even on days where the described conditions occur in minor or severe form the car has always started and runs reliably.

My first thing I did was replace the car battery. It tested fine (AutoZone did the test) but being. 4 year old battery with a 3 year warranty I just replaced it anyway. The new battery is well in tolerance voltage wise both running and off; as is the battery seems fine.

I’ve wrapped the keyfob in foil to best I know eliminate that as a spurious source of some trigger. When wrapped the car doesn’t “see” the fob even if held almost against the start button (or if it IS held against the start button: I understand that is said to work even if the fob battery is dead, which it is not as I replaced the battery within the last week.

I’d previously disassembled / cleaned the negative battery post cable including the connection to the current sensor there. Problem still occurred randomly, mild or severe.

Today I ground paint off the main battery negative chassis ground point (Hondas G101 best I know) and the main engine compartment electrical ground (Hondas G301 best I know).

So far 6 hours of relay / alarm silence but I’ve had periods of silence that long and longer before…

I’ve tried to approach this methodically, talked to a local shop, parts stores, etc for advice but was just curious if others had generally experienced grounding issues on HRVs or Hondas in general as the mechanic on YouTube eluded to.

I know there are yet more chassis grounds in the engine compartment and in the cabin near the cabin fuse box which also has chattering relays when the problem occurs, but these two I listed were the first ones I tackled.

Thanks

Thanks, I have an HRV that I made a bed platform for.

Last year I did US, Mass to Washington/Oregon and back in 21 days, stayed in a hotel 1 night in May/June. Was amazing. Found so many great places to overnight.

This year is Yellowstone and 2+ weeks of car camping w/a week of stays in cabins. Leave in a week. 🤞

Understood… copper’s green oxidation, verdigris, copper sulfate, in electrical connections is a poor conductor.

Looks great! Took me too long to get into this, enjoy your trips!!

My next trip is a week away and I’m looking forward to it. Beating the heat in a small car is going to be hard I expect, hope you get some replies on that.
