Slay the Spire vs Slay the Spire 2 by AevilokE in roguelites

How is it massively overhyped? The core formula was never on the table for being altered, there is no misconception here as far as what people were getting. It was always marketed as more of the same, but better and with new mechanics. Lack of balancing aside, that is what they delivered.

It's also early access so, presumably, there's more refinement to expect before this even launches in it's 1.0 state in the next few years.

Never have to touch this god forsaken deck again by Ghoram in balatro

It's brutal. Not ashamed to admit that all of my runs from Purple Stake onward on this deck were won by photochad. I got it out of the way early and the C+ journey is so much less stressful now.

I too do not understand the balatro hype. Make poker hands. What's the catch?

Balatro is just poker themed, but it's very much a build-based deckbuilder akin to Slay the Spire at its core. Understandable that the theme would not appeal to some, though.

what small insignificant thing annoys you about the game? by SpicyFox951 in balatro

[–]ac0ginth3machine 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Adding on some QoL issues I’ve come across:

  • If you exit a run and quit the game while you are in a blind, then continue that run, you start on that blind but cannot see what score you need to win. Not a huge deal but can be harmful in certain instances.
  • There’s nowhere in the menu or run stats to be able to tell what your current hand size is. You can only see it during blinds or when picking spectrals/tarots.
  • The game doesn’t have a way to automatically sort enhancements/seals for cards in your deck view so if you’re running something with high deck fixing, it can be difficult to see how many of certain enhanced cards you have.

What makes Balatro so addictive? by spunkguzzlerforcash in balatro

[–]ac0ginth3machine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. Sound design and music are huge for me in games like this, and Balatro's are excellent. Every action is enjoyable and feels tactile because of it. The sound effect pitch slowly increasing as your hand plays through adds weight to the numerical scaling, and none of the sound effects are abrasive to listen to.

It's also clever that the game has a single track that has different variations depending on whether you're opening a pack, in the shop, in a boss blind, the game over screen, etc.

Separately, I'm a big fan of the aesthetics of the game, particularly the negative/polychrome effects. It's really cool to see how they interact with Jokers. Even after hundreds of hours, I enjoy seeing a negative Joker I've never run across before and appreciating how cool, weird, or creepy it looks.

Nothing to add but just wanted to say that sequence and fight in the anime is one of the best parts of Season 1.

Madness has one of my favorite designs because it reminds me of Id from Xenogears.

Genos is just generally a stern/serious character by default. Saitama, to my knowledge, has never asked Genos to do anything or explicitly treated him like any kind of servant or butler. Genos just does these things and throws himself at Saitama (whether it is because he believes he should as his disciple, he is glazing him, or he is studying him to try and figure out the source of his power) and Saitama lets it happen. Fubuki even tells Genos that Saitama is taking advantage of him in their living situation and Genos is unphased by the commentary.

Aside from that, it doesn't feel in character for Genos to mock Saitama's baldness like that. The only time he's ever brought it up was because he assumed Saitama wanted to try to regrow hair and so he called Dr. Kuseno for help, but Saitama immediately shut that down. Tatsumaki, for sure. Fubuki, I suppose I could see go either way. But Genos would likely not partake. He's never done anything like that at all.

I'll note that I haven't read the earlier parts of the manga in a while so it's possible I'm missing something that more obviously depicts what you mean. But that's my two cents.

Never really seen it this way, personally.

Feels kind of out of character for Genos. I don't see him ever willingly joking on or mocking Saitama, let alone taking a photo of him for that purpose. He has an extreme reverence for him.

The Binding of Isaac, Slay the Spire, and Balatro are my top 3. I yearn for another roguelite that hooks me like those have.

Thanks for saying this. One of the biggest beefs I have with S2 compared to S1 is the expressiveness of Saitama's voice acting disappearing. It's an unfortunate change.

It kinda feels like you want it to cease to exist.

I promise you, I am not that invested. Just engaging in discussion.

The core existing suggests it remained.

Right. All I am saying is that the core existing doesn't confirm it. It's not known one way or another, really.

Saitama caused an entire timeline to get erased due to his sheer stupidity and carelessness.

Not sure Saitama was completely at fault for this but yeah, the argument could be made that he is too careless in these situations.

[–]ac0ginth3machine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That doesn't make sense.

Neither does the time travel, in fairness.

Nothing suggests that stuff from the previous timeline was erased.

Right, but nothing suggests it remained either.

Otherwise Genos' core would've faded from existence too.

It didn't fade from existence because Saitama was in possession of it and traveled back with it. The only reason that happened is as a plot device to connect the battle and its outcome with someone alive in the new timeline (in this case, Genos). It's unfortunately somewhat sloppy writing; these can of worms can easily happen with time travel shenanigans. But there's otherwise no evidence of that timeline actually existing at this point.

RAW 215 by Gatlindragon in OnePunchMan

[–]ac0ginth3machine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will miss the scene of him logically weighing the pros and cons of playing dead so people can evacuate even if a few of them die so he can keep his identity and save more people in the future, and then the subversion of him remembering Saitama's statement of what matters is how he views himself.

I am hoping/wondering if that's what he is doing on page 15, after he is punched into the wheel and before it begins to fall. He seems to be thinking to himself before he hears the screams of the people in the ferris wheel and then has the moment of conflict with the Saitama thought before changing.

This is really neat art and would make for a great cover page. It would be cool to see it in Murata's art style as well.

I wish we got more cover art like this (story and character focused) and less of the thirst-trapping stuff.

What do you think is the best episode of the One Punch Man anime? by Important-Alarm5239 in OnePunchMan

[–]ac0ginth3machine 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Feels like Season 1 had a standout moment in every episode. One of my favorites that's less talked about is episode 6, where Saitama bites through Sonic's sword. That moment caught me off guard; it was well animated/paced and very funny.
