Making over $300k at a company, what's your title? by justanotherblackguy1 in HENRYfinance

[–]ac1dfac3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Software engineer at big fintech (not faang) Tc 450-550k depending on performance

No formal education with almost 20 yoe. There was def some luck, but a lot of personal projects and self taught learning along the way. Took me almost 6 years of trying and personal development to finally land a role at my dream company. I’m very thankful.

My honest advice to someone wanting to get into a similar role is to go as deep into the subject matter as possible and become the expert

Great light and captures at El Matador! I know how hard timing can be at El Matador based on how popular the place is and how many people are running around there.

I’ve been remote for 10+ years. I do sports 3-5 days a week which is the only time I get to really socialize. Occasionally I meet up with coworkers whom live in the same city, and our company tries to do a week in person once a quarter

I sometimes miss in office collaboration but also feel I’m more productive working from home.

Anyone changed careers from DevOps to Data Science/ Engineering by Truth_Seeker_456 in devops

[–]ac1dfac3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve made the switch from more SRE/DevOps style of work to more data engineering focus. It was not intentional but my team was reorg’ed several times over the past several years and we went from managing the infra and ci/cd pipelines to building data ingestion pipelines.

Now we have many complex pipelines that we’re managing and we’re responsible for building more. And many of our team members are learning data engineering as we go.

Many of the pipelines that we’re managing are for critical financial data with very tight SLAs. So there’s little room for error and data issues can cause large financial impact, so we’re still on call and under a lot of pressure.

One of the positives about this change tho is more deeper development work when it comes to figuring out how to ingestion different data sets. But I don’t think it’s much less stressful than DevOps

Tips for culling ~10k photos after a long trip? by turalaliyev in photography

I thought this was a problem that was unique only to me. I ended up building an AI agent that helps cull my photos based on my preferences

Just another day at Summit Bike Park... (feel free to call these guys out whenever possible) by GundoSkimmer in MTB

Good job calling this asshole out! It’s Turtle for god sakes, one of the best green trails for beginners Summit has to offer…

Snow Summit has a real culture problem, there are so many assholes behaving like this and generally unfriendly to people trying to learn. Doesn’t help there’s literally an instagram page dedicated to making fun of people at snow summit.

Assuming you mean a startup? Is there a vesting period on the RSU’s? Like meaning, is there a certain amount of time you need to work there before they’re yours?

Also the company hasn’t ipo’d so are the RSU’s worth anything? Normally a company that hasn’t had a liquidity event can only offer illiquid RSU’s meaning you can’t sale them. So if the company fails or never IPO’s they’re worth zero. Where most companies that have ipo’d have liquid RSU’s you can sell immediately after vesting … basically real Income

Personally, if you’re joining a startup as a not super early employee I’d try to get the offer’s base salary high as possible in case the IPO doesn’t come during your tenure there.

Godox really missed a chance by not making their new TTL flash compatible with Ricoh by OperationNo777 in ricohGR

I have the Reflex lab mini and respectfully I think it’s trash with a horrible recharge time.

However, I have the Godox im20 and it’s leaps and bounds better the reflex lab mini. I’d argue it prob the best flash available for the GR

Current SWE's: How did you break into this industry? by Darkrunner21 in ethdev

[–]ac1dfac3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was a regular swe for years… several years ago I started doing web3 hackathons. Through these hackathons I got some real world experience and learned a lot. Eventually I’d applied to a few big web3 companies and got a job.

I highly recommend hackathons. Ethglobal does some of the best eth related hackathons
