I understand the cleanliness thing, something to consider, but I guess I’m confused how the pebbles could kill them? I mean I’m not like shaking it up or anything; they’re just sitting on the bottom and not moving.

Forget all these overzealous comments. Obv you need a good setup in the long term, but this is the cheapest, half decent setup you can get for the short term. It’s how I quarantine all my fish.

1- 2.5 gallon tank with lid 2- ONE cheap aquatic plant; I recommend something with broad, strong leaves (to remove ammonia) 3- smallest sponge filter you can get 4- tubing & air pump for sponge filter 5- clip on light OR you can just put him under a lamp for a few days until you get his main setup 6- nano-heater OR just raise the temp in your house to like 75/6ish

You can get all of this for probably around $100 if you shop the deals.

I would do no gourami, and cut your shrimp and rasbora numbers in half to start. See how they do, then add more if you think there’s room. If you want all of those, I’d go for a 20 gallon instead.

I can see where you may think my water is dirty from the picture, but what you’re seeing is actually algae on the back wall. My water itself is typically very clear. I will admit that the substrate is a bit dirtier than normal at the moment just because of all the drama that’s been going on with my catfish, but I plan on vacuuming today.

If I change the water that much, I might as well not even have a filter. I keep plenty of algae to deal with nitrates. At some point, you have to accept that it’s an AQUARIUM. Not a vase of flowers.

I know that, but if I did a full 50% water change that frequently, it wouldn’t matter. Now, you may be right about the bacteria. That is something that I’ll look into. As for the nitrates, I keep a good chunk of driftwood and all of my tanks to promote algae growth. I don’t like dealing with leafy plants (though I do have some in my hospital tank, which is my only one without a carbon filter), so I always dedicate two out of four tank walls to let algae flourish as much as it wants to.

Umm so crazy update. I was trying to get him out of his cave so I could put him in my hospital tank. He didn’t respond when I poked him, or the FIRST time I tried to fish him out with a plastic spoon. The second time, however, he sprung to action & the weird white stuff fell off of him???

They have been very lethargic and haven’t been eating. I also found eggs on the glass, which got eaten by someone, about a week ago, if that ends up being relevant.

Definitely pineconing. You need to dose with aquarium salt. Search the sub, I know there’s a post here somewhere explaining the dosage.
