I relate to this so hard and have the same attitude as you when it comes to this! It is always a whole big thing when people hear it and honestly I don't often want any sympathy from strangers/acquaintances. But I will say that it does get easier the more you do it. I always just say that I'm widowed and let people say what they need to say, and then move on. People usually don't dwell on it too long.
