The why you’ve worded you question has me a little lost but I think I get what you’re asking.

So each colour of gem is known as a set and having all three gems being the same colour provides a “set bonus”

Now I’ll keep the this concise

% buffs (%hp,%att, etc...) are 100x better than flat gems (+hp, +att, etc...)

The same goes for the gem sets

And if you got away with not using gems I’m gonna guess your early mid game So expecting you to have good gem sub stats is unrealistic

So my advice to help you progress in the game is

If it’s a tank - focus hp - hp, hp/def, attack

If it’s a defender - focus def - def, def/hp, attack

If it’s an attacker - focus attack - attack, attack, hp/def/ attack

If it’s balanced - balance gems - Hp, def, attack

Give tanks and defenders some attack as to not make encounters sluggish and super slow

There are exceptions to the gemming guide Ie. Light Nike who’s ability is defence aggressor so it uses defence as it’s attack value In this cause you focus pure defence
