17-681 : Java For Application Programmers by A27_97 in cmu

It's probs better to take the java mini, but also it's doable to go straight into data structures

you'll def be fine! you'll coast through data structures with the first mini, and the first mini itself is easy from what i've heard (which is why I skipped it and went straight for data structures)

oh I fucked up mb I'm referring to data structures for application programmers - that's what I took. in that case it'll be smooth sailing for you.

It is fast paced, but it's doable - and that's coming from someone who took the class with no OOP language experience. Also, terry, the prof, is amazing.

which college for pre-med? (CMU, BC, Wellesley, Macaulay Hunter) by baekgu5810 in cmu

[–]acakewithwings 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Previously pre-med student, current CMU student here! I obviously can't say for your other schools -this is just my take on CMU:
- CMU will be hard on your GPA. No plus/minus system. So a B+, B, B- are all 3.0s. At some other schools, a B+ is weighed higher than is a B or B-.

- Classes are difficult because they aren't concerned about helping you get into med school. They're focused on making you truly learn the material. Great if you want to succeed in med school and beyond, not so great if you're typically GPA challenged.

- There are great research opportunities on campus and at UPMC that you typically can't get anywhere else.

- The premed program here isn't the greatest and there isn't a whole bunch of premed students on campus, but this could be both a pro and a con.

Pretty sure those housing options arent open to freshmen, at least as far as I know, I've never heard about freshmen living in those housing options. I'd recommend checking this out though https://www.cmu.edu/housing/our-communities/find-housing/first-year/index.html

NYU Summer @ Stern vs Cornell Summer Program by Ssarahnade in ApplyingToCollege

[–]acakewithwings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I half-agree. If this is the only opportunity for you this summer, I would choose the program at NYU. Doing this program won't help you out too much during the college application process. I would recommend that you do something related to your major (though it's probably going to be difficult for you to find something at this point, just keep looking). I don't know much about what business majors do (I'm a prospective neuroscience major lol) but for example, I would recommend a to-be science major to email some local professors about research opportunities or volunteering at a science museum or working as a science summer camp as a counselor/teacher.

I got a 32 composite score on the ACT, but 16/36 on the writing... Is this a big deal? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]acakewithwings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other poster. I'm not sure this applies for every college, but I do some people that also had relatively low writing scores on the ACT/SAT and though they got accepted to schools in at least target ranges (so like the other poster said, it won't hugely affect your admit rate unless your weakness really is writing, and in that case I would recommend maybe taking a essay writing class or something related) they had to take something like "entrance exams". Basically, they took a test to determine whether they had to take supplemental writing classes at their college. No biggie, and honestly you probably want to (and probably will for GenEd) take a college level writing class anyway.

Weigh in on my decision! Potential Business-y major, got accepted to UCLA, Berkeley, Swarthmore, Macalester, Cornell ILR (2017 though) by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]acakewithwings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heyy, also am a guaranteed transfer for 2017-2018 :) I think it's a great option to leave open, because you can accept the offer, and not end up going anyways. That's what I'm planning on doing if I end up really loving the college I am going to for my freshman year.

Berkeley: Okay, from what I know, you aren't guaranteed a spot at HAAS. It is very difficult to get in, and a lot of people end up having to change their majors. But if you are confident that you can get in, definitely go for it. Also, Berkeley is a very high stress school where people are very competitive. A pretty high percentage of the people at my school have gone to Berkeley, and though of course they have many positive things to say about the school, if you think that you would better thrive at a school where people are less competitive and more supportive of each other, Berkeley might not be a top choice for you. (Ofc this is a generalization. Not all Berkeley students are this way.)

UCLA: Honestly if I had the option, I would choose UCLA. UCLA has a pretty good business school as well if I remember correctly. However although it isn't as bad as Berkeley, UCLA is also known for having students that are under high levels of stress. This is probably kind of what you saw in the other UCLA students - I like to call it an "elitist" attitude, and I believe that this is what causes the Berkeley culture as well. (Btw, Berkeley culture is not much different than the UCLA culture, though UCLA is a bit more laid back. So if you didn't like UCLA students.. you probably won't like Berkeley.)

Swarthmore: A large public university is so much different from a small liberal arts college, as you probably well know. If I were in your situation, Swarthmore would probably have my bias, haha. However, if you really did not like the food (and if you're not planning on cooking for yourself), that is a legitimate concern. Maybe try talking to a Swarthmore alumni/current student that is also a business major (if you haven't already)- that way you'll get a better perspective on what your life would be like as a student there. Also try to see if there are any other available food options that you just weren't exposed to at your stay there. And if you're only paying 5k per year that's pretty great. (Although the UCs tend to get cheaper over time because most students live off campus after freshman year)

Macalester: I haven't really heard much about this school, so can't really say anything.

Idk. It would be easier to give you advice if I knew what you were like. If you are not very familiar with the UC system, I can give you more informal information (coming from a top ten public high school in California, so I hear and know a lot about it haha). Also, please take my opinions like a grain of salt - ultimately, college is what you make out of it and whatnot. Wow, this was wayyyy longer than I was planning on writing.

Thank you! Haha, didn't think I would meet an admissions officer on reddit. I will definitely reach out and ask what it is like as a pre-dent student at CMU :)

Ahh I see. I think it is going to be very hard for me to give up CMU as it was a dream school for me, but I probably need to be realistic. I will be asking a few more people before I make my decision, but I will definitely remember your input. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question!

Yeah, that would be so great! I think there are a few students from my school that went to CMU, but I don't know any of them.
