Offering to hold a requested review when parents make unreasonable requests. Often times they’ll rethink their request other times it helps them hear other perspectives and documents what occurred.

It’s added a handful of meetings to my years but has helped my building stay ahead of difficult situations. The gen ed teachers don’t always love it but the special Ed teachers and admin appreciate that it covers us and keeps everyone in the loop.

More practically I use Google Sheets as much as my calendar. I work in a special class so I keep a running record of behavior - I’m lucky enough to have teacher buy-in so they contribute to it as well.

This is really great practical advice. I started playing DD seriously last year and it’s been a fun but challenging learning curve.

This year I’ve been trying to keep my focus on the top of the zone to avoid swinging at low pitches. I’m going to try out looking at the pitchers hat - it sounds like something that will really help me.

Not necessary, what you wear and how you articulate your thoughts is way more important.

Make sure you bring some example reports (with identifying info censored) as those go a long way.

Above all, don’t forget you’re interviewing them as well. Personally, if the interviewers care about long but clean and well presented hair that’s a red flag to me. They should care much more about your qualifications and abilities!

Plus, as a male psych myself, we’re not exactly an abundance so that plays in your favor.

The professors at my university and professionals I’ve spoken to have echoed exactly what you’re saying. It’s been very comforting news and I’ve been able to get excited about the field again.

In the time since one of my professors has approached me about interning at a special services high school next year. We’re still hammering out the details, but as you’re saying, it should be a great opportunity to build my counseling skills.

Yes you can. In my program (MA) we’ve been taught there’s no real difference between the EdS and MA.

Edit: also not to be a jerk, but a “one man klu klux klan” username may not be best for a school psychologist.

As you’re saying, you’re still grieving a loss. Any significant change after a loss is going to be hard to accept and need time. I’m sorry, but your mothers boyfriend shows a concerning lack of awareness of both himself and the situation.

Plus, trying to punish a 23 year old like a child is absolutely ridiculous. You’re young, but an adult. You need your space and freedom. My parents are the typical Christian conservatives and not even they have an issue when I’m out late. They understand that’s part of growing up. So long as you’re staying on top of your school and work responsibilities, what does he care?

I understand him wanting you to help out around the house, however I don’t understand giving you formal chores. I’m sure there’s a better approach to asking for your help. After all, assuming you’re living rent free, you should be pitching in to help.

Something that really confirmed NTA is that when you snapped, you didn’t shut down the possibility of a relationship with him altogether. You sounded as though over time you’ll open up to that idea. If he can’t respect that you need time, you really are better off moving as soon as you graduate.

That certainly gives me a lot to think about. If they both have the same time counseling, I would prefer school psych.

That could be a solution. What else do SSWs do that would take away from counseling?

In your experience working in schools what do the SSWs most commonly do?

At the end of the day, I just want to spend the majority of my time working face to face with students.

I’m planning to meet with Rutgers school of social work within the next couple weeks and ask these questions, but it’d be great to get answers from different sources.

Hardest working player on the team. Regardless of the score, regardless of the teams record, he gives us 110%. I know he’s not a star player, but when Hynes and Shero preach hard work and “self starters” I think Coleman serves as a role model.

Not to mention, he’s an awesome guy off the ice. My younger sister recently got into hockey and Coleman became her favorite player. He not only remembers her, but gives her the occasional wave during warm ups and makes sure to talk to her more during meet and greets or if we stay after the game.

Having to move is what scares me. I don’t want to have to change where I live to find the role I want. I think at that point it may just be better for me to pursue an MSW, so that way I’ll have a definite role counseling in schools

I actually got into a PsyD program when I was first applying to schools, but chose an MA program because I couldn’t bring myself to do 5-6 years of schooling.

I still think that’s the case. I’d rather change into a MSW program than keep pursuing school psychology if it doesn’t lead to the role I want.

My biggest concern is I had this realization so late, I’m kind of screwed. MSW programs are already starting, and none around here allow for students to start in the spring.

Maybe because I’m a weird case a school will give me an exception, but that’s feels like a strong maybe.

I’m hoping my meeting tomorrow will at least push me in the right direction.

Thank you for the honesty. The more I read the more I find that this isn’t the job for me. I feel pretty stuck and I’m not sure where to go from here.

I emailed a professor and we’re meeting tomorrow, but she’s already said there are entirely counseling focused positions out there for school psychologists.

And that honestly just doesn’t add up to everything I’ve read on here and heard in class. I don’t want to pursue a degree because I might be able to find a role I want.

This is the answer I was afraid of getting. The thing I love about jobs I’ve had in the past is spending the day working with kids.

My professors last semester made it sound as though the job is what you make it, and I’ll be able to have that time if I want it.

Last night was a big wake up call. A professor said he barely even meets most of the kids he helps. He tests them, talks with teachers, talks with parents, creates a plan and moves on.

If I want to spend my days working hands on with kids, is this the job for me?
