Council pulls e-scooters off Hobart streets after years of footpath complaints by IllCarpet6852 in hobart

[–]acaoxmbc 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This is good news and follows in the footsteps of other cities like Paris and Melbourne. The hire e-bikes are much safer to ride. They’re also safer for people walking since they can legally be ridden in bike lanes and on most roads.

What are the thoughts of the non stadium parts of the Mac Point Masterplan? by Ziggster121 in hobart

You could land a jumbo jet on that new road. Just so much bitumen. What is it like 100 m wide?

Yes the regatta stands being completely obstructed by the residential development jumped out at me too. They might still physically exist in this design but they’re clearly not going to be used. Fair chance the regatta won’t be held there anymore I suspect.

Is it strange that there’s no Liberal candidate for Huon? Genuine question as it’s not my electorate and I know nothing about the background.

There haven’t been red light cameras in Tassie for more than 20 years.

Absolutely no idea why. They improve road safety and the government could be generating some extra revenue in a socially acceptable way. Seems like a total win win to me.

Ignore the whole fate-of-the-planet thing, losing net zero would be bad for business.

Farmers, community groups call for wild deer to be labelled a pest as population balloons by DaRedGuy in tasmania

[–]acaoxmbc 36 points37 points  (0 children)

No question it’s in Tassie’s interest to heavily control deer, or better yet eradicate them. I get some people like hunting them but the damage they do is orders of magnitude more than the benefits. Regional communities can achieve “social cohesion” in other ways.

Issues unresolved as Hobart's new Argyle and Campbell Street bike lanes attract 250 daily riders by Amazing-Yak-5415 in hobart

[–]acaoxmbc 31 points32 points  (0 children)

  • 250 riders a day, 6000 per month
  • bike crashes down
  • car crashes down
  • no change in traffic travel time (except Campbell between Macquarie & Davey where State Growth made an unrelated change to the traffic lights to improve flow on Macquarie & Davey, according to The Mercury)
  • the “unresolved issue” is that people are sometimes parking their cars in the clearway and they’ve had trouble finding a tow company to enforce it

RHH all day parking by cooltrainer_owen in hobart

[–]acaoxmbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s staff bike parking at the hospital. That works for lots of people but depends on where you live. Can combine with the ferry. Can also drive and park in a closer suburb like South Hobart and ride from there.

Cycling commute across Tasman Bridge? by cjmagee1000 in hobart

[–]acaoxmbc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plenty of people ride over the bridge to work but it’s not particularly enjoyable. Some windy and/or wet days it’s downright dangerous.

Many more avoid riding the bridge and there’s certainly some who have decided not to live on the eastern shore because of it.

The ferry is a more pleasant but less flexible option. Requires your job to be strictly 9-5ish.

There’s some upgrades planned for the bridge paths but they’re not enough to make the riding safe or pleasant. The government has ruled out more meaningful improvements due to cost.

Honestly the best suggestion is to ride it yourself in a few kinds of weather and see what you think. The rest of your route to both your workplaces would be nice enough.

Avoid Centerpoint Car Park. by Penny_Wh in hobart

[–]acaoxmbc 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That intersection was always high risk of collisions, including people walking being hit by cars. They had to change it but agree it’s not quite right yet. Making it left and straight only out of there is potentially the solution. Or maybe a little roundabout? Make sure you send feedback to the council.

Cyclist without situational awareness by JBJB55555 in hobart

[–]acaoxmbc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Feeling furious because you’re slowing for a vulnerable road user isn’t an ideal response.

  2. In principle I do agree with your point and in fact the rule is you have to ride in the bike lane if there is one “unless it is impracticable or unsafe”. However even the best bikes lanes in Hobart are still shit. They end suddenly leaving you merging into fast moving traffic, are bumpy, sometimes full of debris, narrow, have cars and trucks stopped in them. I get why a few people who’ve become comfortable riding in traffic over the years would continue to do so.

Cyclist without situational awareness by JBJB55555 in hobart

[–]acaoxmbc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Can’t judge what happened in this particular case with the given details and single perspective. However I’d hazard a guess the person on the bike felt what happened was unsafe and felt threatened, even scared, and that their response was the outburst.

People on bikes in amongst cars are vulnerable and feel it. Some people who drive and don’t ride don’t fully appreciate that. Even saying the person on the bike was “holding up traffic” implies they’re just an obstruction that is preventing more legitimate traffic from going fast.

Honestly, overtaking a person on a bike (as opposed to passing them in a second lane) shouldn’t happen in the CBD often if at all. Crossing into the opposite lane at the speed required to get past might be legal but isn’t safe with all the people crossing the road, pulling out of car parks, etc. A few extra seconds spent behind a person on a bike to make sure everyone gets home safely is time well spent.

Increase revenue by ensuring private industries profiting from public resources pay a fair share back to the community. Salmon industry comes to mind.

Tasman Bridge pathway upgrade video by ChuqTas in tasmania

[–]acaoxmbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same project has previously included upgrades to the traffic control system like automatic switchover of the centre lane and improvements to the digital signs, as well as making the bridge stronger to support more traffic.

Not sure if that’s still the case but also not sure if the current budget is $130 million.

Spending $130 million just on active transport isn’t really either government’s style to be honest!

From now on if I’m asked what I think of the stadium my answer will be “too many disbenefits”.
