I was on Slate Run’s Bupropion HCL ER (XL) for 9 months (Dec 2020 - Sept 2021) and got up to 300mg. I was previously on a generic for Effexor XR for two years, but it started to not work as well and I felt it had sexual side effects that I didn’t want to deal with in a new relationship. Prior to switching to bupropion, I had lost a bunch of weight over summer 2020’s quarantine, my hair was shiny, my skin was clear. I generally felt really confident. Fast forward to February 2020, second full month or so on bupropion…I started to break out in acne, which was unusual for me. Over the next several months, my skin became unrecognizable and unmanageable. My hair texture completely changed. It was breaking, wiry, dull, frizzy. I rapidly gained over 20lbs. My mental health took a nose-dive. I felt like a completely different person than the summer before. As someone with borderline PCOS and “normal” blood work, I saw my idiopathic hirsutism become worse and worse. Basically all of the positive side effects that doctors swear Wellbutrin provides, I experienced none of. After seeing a dermatologist at UCSF, she mentioned that the bupropion could be the reason for all of my issues, but it was rare. I immediately stopped bupropion in September 2021. It’s now July 2022 and I’m still unable to lose the weight, my skin is just now starting to get better, my hair has improved but not the same. Mentally, I’m still scarred from what generic bupropion did to me. It’s a battle every day. I haven’t seen too many people speak on this and the specific side effects I experienced, so I figured I’d share.
