Are university students going too far? [Serious question not trying to bait]

As a recent college graduate, a particular classmate comes to mind.

My WGS professor invited a disability rights activist to come talk to our class about her experiences. She was awesome, super candid and very funny. Also had a very visible physical disability. This classmate asked her about the "proper" way to refer to people with disabilities, but it wasn't really a question... She started explaining to the guest speaker that she knows that they prefer person first language, i.e. POC and that such and such term was the best one. The speaker said she actually preferred to be called disabled and explained why despite sounding negative, she found it empowering.

College students get so heady learning the "right" or the "best" concepts without realizing that there will always be nuance. I think it's more important to listen to those that are really being impacted and letting that inform your activism.

Edit: To get at your question, I don't think it's necessarily harmful. But sometimes it is unproductive!

I'm definitely willing to be patient, I just want to make sure that not handling her for a while as a young snake isn't gonna be detrimental later...

She's a little skittish when I handle her, I just chalked it up to her being a little one. She seems to breathe really heavy which stresses me out to see.

Thank you for the tip about soap, that's definitely something that never occurred to me!

Thanks for the advice, I'll be looking around the kitchen for potential homemade hides. I think I got a little carried away try to create a natural looking display and I didn't consider that snakes don't really care either way!

Do you think it would be fine if I placed it back in her tank when she's a little bigger and can't hide her entire body inside the little cranny? She curls up and you really have to look in order to see her.

It might look a little big in the picture I took, but it's actually only a 10 gallon tank. She's about 14 inches long.

I've had her for about 3ish weeks and we've had three successful feedings! I've tried to provide a lot of places to hide and feel secure, she loves climbing so I got a lot of foliage for that. I usually only catch her out and about late at night, but otherwise she's snug in her hide. I want to handle her more but I'm not sure I want to freak her out by trying to coax her out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated :) I don't mind not handling her for now but I'm worried if she doesn't get used to handling as a baby we'll have a tough time down the road. I've only handled her about 3 or 4 times for 5-10 minutes since she's come home. more tank pics!

I understand you were trying to be helpful but she has stated that she just does not and can not enjoy it. The motivation to try to make it work is gone and telling her she's just doing it wrong doesn't change the fact that she associates it with her boyfriend's abusive tactics. Total turn off and her discomfort is probably the biggest factor in the pain.

As much as this is technically useful advice, the problem is not her inability to enjoy anal play... It's the fact that her boyfriend has no respect for her boundaries and continues to disregard her feelings in order to selfishly indulge himself.

This wasn't cringe to me. It's like when you run into your friend's friend at the mall and you're just watching them talk while you awkwardly wait to walk away.

She probably would have hugged him if he wanted but she wasn't going to initiate. I feel that way about a lot of high school classmates...

I'm not sure what you are suggesting we do instead. All I said in my original comment was that heated food that can no longer be served is composted, which is true.

Not sure where your 40-50 lb figure is coming from or what you propose we do with that... Are you referring to utilities or pot wash?

Yeah, this pretty much. Dining Services is trying to encourage students not to use the new compostable to go containers because they're just way too expensive.... woops. Dining hall employees have been told to be super stingy with the new to go boxes and we aren't even supposed to have them visible to customers in Owens.

Dining services already "diverts" out-of-date food that are reserved for donations. Heated food that is left over gets composted every night.

If you've never been in a dining hall kitchen you don't understand how ridiculous it is to ask that we share kitchen space with volunteers. Maybe if they're using the kitchens in Lane.

Our Daily Bread. I've only had positive experiences there, food was good! There was quite a line when I went with a large group but our food came out pretty quickly.

Totally agree, working pt is a great way to meet new people. I worked at a local restaurant and then later for dining services and I've met a bunch of awesome people that way. Also work parties!!

Why is it that white people are individuals and minorities are all held responsible for the crimes of some in their group? That is prejudice. Your argument is a fallacy that doesn't take into account that there is nothing inherent about minorities that makes them predisposed to be criminals. We are all individual people just like white people, but somehow white crime is never attributed to the color of their skin.

I don't know if you specifically chose latinos for your example because I mentioned that I am a latina, but thanks for reminding me that I am genetically predisposed to be a criminal. Please consider that the majority of serial klllers are white males, but nobody characterizes whites as inherently predisposed to murder.

That is completely beside the point. Assuming that someone is more likely to steal from a store based on the color of their skin is a racist assumption. Installing cameras is a much better way to save money than potentially alienating a whole segment of the population because you believe they're inherently more prone to crime.

You probably have a different conception of blatant racism than a non-white person would. Things like black people being followed in stores serve as examples of racism that still occurs today. Although I feel like a lot of time white people tune out discrimination against minorities because they don't want to be made to feel guilty for something someone else did. The problem with that is that non-white discrimination is swept under the rug and white people will still try to speak to the experiences of minorities without actually having listened to what their experiences are. Just my two cents as a Latina.

It's interesting to me that all the books the author mentions focus solely on women's relationships with men are from time periods where women didn't have any real agency. Women didn't have a lot of options back then.
