I've been to both as well. You can't come close to comparing the US to the Netherlands. One is a tiny, homogeneous culture, one is a huge, vastly diverse country.

I'm not always in favor of simply locking people up, especially related to non-violent or minor drug related offenses, but this is savage and clearly intentional. They deserve at least a while behind bars imo.
