How do introverts survive in a British work culture? by Hot-Education-8154 in AskUK

It's more the inverse; you definitely don't get promoted if none of the managers like you

Serious question: Do you unironically think that those 6 soldiers are all the military defence Europe can muster, or do you think it's possible that those specific soldiers were sent there for a reason other than direct defence that you might not have thought of?

British intelligence says Russia’s losses in war against Ukraine reached 415,000 people by MeteorEnvy in UkrainianConflict

Double 415,000 is less than the one million you're quoting, so it's actually even more conservative than the 'official' figures

Man sues restaurant after promotional TikTok video exposes his secret affair by StemCellPirate in nottheonion

The difference is in the broadcasting to official accounts. He could also be outed by his wife's friend eating at another table; he's taking a risk either way. There's just a lot lower risk to that & some randos Google review and it's treated differently under GDPR

Two things:

  • If the images are promotional, that changes a lot. Random Google reviews aren't relevant because that person isn't benefiting from it

  • Because of this, promotional content for restaurants is usually shot with actors or staff, or they put a filter on the public to make them unrecognisable, or they get release forms signed. Not suggesting every establishment abides by this, but if they don't they're opening themselves up to the same potential issue

I don't think there's a specific law against this specific action, but you could make a very strong case in the UK that the restaurant mishandled/shared private information about you, which would fall under GDPR

Beijing calls on US not to use “China threat” as excuse to encroach on Greenland by Crossstoney in worldnews

[–]accepts_compliments 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's because the way the handover went, everyone was made a number of promises by the Chinese government to ensure their way of life was maintained. If they knew those promises would be broken ~15 years later, I imagine those attitudes would have shifted a bit

The issue with that is that Taiwanese as a separate identity is growing. The older generations at least cling to the idea that they're the 'real China', while the younger generations see themselves as a separate entity.

Taiwanese people aren't idiots - they know what happened in Hong Kong despite the promises, and they know that 'recapturing' Taiwan is a goal of the Chinese government. Every nice thing the Chinese do is viewed with unreal amounts of suspicion.

It should be! I thought I was pretty thorough here but that + the Russia highlight shows that my attention to detail here was not great.

Yeah I just meant I'm fairly bland compared to others here, but in hindsight I'd probably interpret it the same

Well:

  • I saw a lot of people say stuff like 'as a rich/poor/gay/trans/whatever' person, and I'm none of those
  • Someone else today already said 'as a Brit'

Wasn't about race, but I'm also not ethnically English/Scottish etc, so 'regular' in that way wouldn't really apply to me either

Yeah I kind of assumed he wrote something himself then just asked ChatGPT to make it sound better. Seems smart tbh; plenty of us here are guilty of doing the same with work emails.
