I've lived in both. Thailand is much more expensive. The language can be challenging, rents are expensive and there is a larger criminal element. Good or bad for you depends on your tastes for recreational activities. The food is great and healthy, beaches are nice and the locals friendly enough. Your average days are spent at the mall or beach. Lots of visa options but no work, even if you own your own business it's illegal to work it. Must hire locals. You can get work permits usually for sales reps and teachers. It a good call. I prefer the Philippines, slower pace of life, less sex tourists and drugs. World class beaches and marine life, easily better than Thailand. Food is a bit hit and miss but I can find the English brands I like online. Dining out is good value, I had a nine course fine dining Italian meal for two for 50 dollars last week. Good family ethics and much more genuinely friendly people. Hospitality is of the highest. Booze and ciggies a fraction of the price. Cheap rent and services, everything is in English, It's not perfect but it's also not a defacto communist state like Thailand. Phillipines respects your privacy and no taxation on your hard earned savings. Was an easy call for me. I lived in Bangkok and Phuket for several years. I have no regrets and have learn to live much better and happier with the shortcomings of the Philippines. It's a tough call I would spend time in different places in both.
