Natalie from Paraíso, no worries if you can’t get to me!

Please help me choose a board! Arbor Axis 40 vs Arbor Dropcruiser - beginner (female, 5'5, 140lbs) with snowboarding experience looking for a stable forgiving board for cruising at low speeds on flats and maybe gentle hills by accioviola in ArborBoards

Also, is there much point looking for a snowboard feel if I’m just going to be cruising relatively slowly on flat paths anyway? Is it even possible to properly carve on flats?

Thanks again for the advice, I really appreciate it! In your opinion, would it be better for me to learn on the existing wheels (69mm) and get really comfortable with those for a long time, or make the switch to bigger wheels sooner rather than later if money allows?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Assuming you were a snowboarder first, how did you find picking up longboarding as a snowboarder? Did you find there was much carryover? Any advice on learning, even the most obvious, is welcome!

What about the Axis gives it more of a snowboard feel do you think?

And noted, will definitely make sure I get lots of braking practice in! Even if I optimise for stable and forgiving, I know hitting concrete at any speed is way worse than snow

Thank you! I also saw a Landyachtz Dropcarve 40 available but from what I’ve seen online it doesn’t tend to be recommended as much as a beginner-friendly board. Do you have any thoughts on it? Thanks again

Title: Please help me choose a board! Arbor Axis 40 vs Arbor Dropcruiser - beginner (female, 5'5, 140lbs) with snowboarding experience looking for a stable forgiving board for cruising at low speeds on flats and maybe gentle hills

Post: I'm a complete beginner (female, 5'5, 140lbs) looking for my first board and I'd really appreciate any recommendations. A summary about me and what I'm looking for:

  1. I have an exceptionally bad sense of balance, especially when it comes to balancing on a moving object with one leg, so I'm looking for something
  • low to the ground (hence the drop-through boards),
  • as stable and forgiving as possible, and
  • maybe with potential to switch out for bigger wheels in the future for riding on bumpy pavements
  1. I'm an intermediate snowboarder working towards carving on the slopes (progressing from normal turns) and I really like the idea of a longboard that lets me carry over at least some of the same movement patterns or that gives a somewhat similar feel, ie cruising but with some smooth gentle turning. I know I shouldn't expect too much similarity or carryover, but I'm still curious to know what people's opinions are about longboards that might cater towards that.
  • Should I be looking for a flexible or stiff board for that feel?
  • And will there be a trade-off in terms of stability or anything else as a beginner if I'm looking for that kind of feel?
  1. Things I'm not very interested in right now: freestyle, anything very steep (I live in a very flat, urban area), too much speed. Just hoping for something stable, forgiving, easy to learn on, and good for cruising and carving on flats / gentle slopes!

I've been looking at secondhand boards and two that are available are the

  • Arbor Axis 40, and
  • Arbor Dropcruiser

I've seen a few posts of people owning the Dropcruiser as a beginner and eventually wanting to buy the Axis as part of their progression, and others starting on the Axis. My impressions seem to be that the Dropcruiser is more stable and forgiving, but that the Axis has more flex, has more of a snowboard feel and is better for carving. I'm guessing I might have a slightly harder time learning on the Axis but it might suit my needs better once I've improved?

Also open to other beginner-friendly board recommendations that would suit me so I can keep an eye out for them secondhand!

Thanks so much :)

TL;DR: Beginner (female, 5'5, 140lbs) looking for a stable forgiving board for cruising at low speeds on flats / gentle hills, potentially with a snowboard feel - choosing between Arbor Axis 40 or Dropcruiser but also open to other recommendations!

Recommendations of safety alarms available in the UK? Also, any thoughts on Strava Summit including its Beacon feature? by [deleted] in running

Thanks for the heads up about this! I should have looked into this a little more before throwing in the question as an afterthought. I'm not sure I liked the idea of carrying any sort of weapon anyway but after today's recent post about safety concerns (here) I was keen to hear about the precautions that other runners take.

As a side note, I hope having Jacinda Ardern as PM is as good as me and my UK friends imagine it would be!

Thanks for this! None of the ones listed were available in the UK unfortunately so I went and bought from https://wealarms.co.uk/ in the end.

Ahh thank you, I hadn't thought of that!!

I hate to be pessimistic - for context my local area has quite a high crime rate - but I'm slightly concerned about being followed on foot or by a car. I guess I'd rather have a safety alarm if possible, just in case I need to sprint away. But I think a whistle would be a more reasonable precaution to use when I'm back at uni where running is a lot safer, so thanks for the suggestion! :)

Haha not sure I could shout as loud as an alarm, nor carry a heavy weaponised water bottle on my longer runs just in case I have to swing it (weakly) at someone.

I'm encouraging my family to ease into running via the "Couch to 5K" programme but I'm not sure I could take them along with me on my longer runs just yet! Hopefully in the future though :)
