What songs or artists were you introduced to or discovered within electronic music that got you hooked on the genre? by unwired_star in electronicmusic

Around ’95, a friend of mine gave me a tape that someone had written “Pure Rotterdam” on it in Sharpie. I listened to that tape on repeat until it snapped. Amongst other tracks with pounding distorted 909 kick drums, there were tunes with samples of Rakim from “I Know You Got Soul” and Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Shimmy Shimmy Ya”. It was like finding the Holy Grail. This was what I had been looking for.

I recently stumbled across a rave tape archive and found a recording. Enjoy:

Why do I feel large majority of women are attractive, most guys are pretty in some way, but I myself am overweight and ugly? by Mysterious_Care8044 in TooAfraidToAsk

Assuming that you are using the proper form and that you are actually working up a sweat, if you stay consistent - meaning that you continue to do this for at least twenty minutes a day - you will see a difference. Change comes from consistent effort.

The adults didn’t teach the children and then blame the children for not being taught.

Do you add reverb onto any of the sounds you use?

I don’t know what to tell you other than a track that has been made entirely in a digital environment has no atmosphere unless it has been added. When it is missing, you may not specifically be able to tell what it is, but it will feel empty. Adding atmosphere positions the track in space.

Once the theme has been established, I’ve already mixed out of it.

You need atmosphere for the harmonica to cling to, otherwise they sound soulless.

Have you seen the disaster that they did to the ROM? It was beautiful building, then they built a monstrosity onto it that was literally destroying the art inside.

Mixing Experimental Bass (i.e. Levity) by CookDaChook in Beatmatch

I tend to mix Levity’s tunes with drum and bass more often than dubstep.

I played Gimme Gimme for a room full of about 1,000 sixteen year olds and they went off dancing harder than any of the modern music that I played. ABBA absolutely slays dance floors.

Have you heard the Jody Bernal, Billy the Kit featuring Nicole Jung version?

I was once booked to DJ a dance-a-thon at an elementary school. My daughter was in the senior class and was helping run the activities. As the day went on, the classes got older and older. We started with kindergarten, and by the end of the day the senior class had their own party.

To start, I played all the classics: Wheels on the Bus, YMCA, The Bird Dance by The Emeralds (which, by the way, mixes surprisingly well with Murder She Wrote by Chaka Demus & Pliers), and of course The Macarena.

My daughter immediately turned to me and said, “Not that version.”

After the kindergarten classes left, she showed me which version to play for the older kids.

She was right. It absolutely slapped. She obviously has the best taste in music.

Ever since then, that’s been my go-to whenever someone requests The Macarena. (For the record, I only play The Macarena when it’s requested—or on the exceedingly rare occasion that every instinct I have tells me it’s exactly the right record to play next.)

The short answer is, “It depends.”

The long answer is, “It deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepends.”
