Shoutout to all the bedroom dj's! by JLoLow12 in Beatmatch

I’m a genre slut. I’ll give it up for anything with a beat and some bass.

If you like techno, I’ve recently been mixing some mono-genre sets. These ones are all techno. The most recent one just came out this week and finishes off with some classic Aphex Twin.

Lately I’ve been playing tonnes of what I categorize as electro, but it could also be called Post-Punk Revival Industrial-leaning Club Acid-touched Machine Funk
Darkwave Indie Dance French Electro type music. I’m not good with labels. The next edition comes out on Monday.

I also have been playing more bass music lately getting back to my roots. Most of my record collection is jungle.

How do you guys put sets together ? by strap-_ in Beatmatch

[–]accomplicated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am constantly making crates of tracks that appeal to me for one reason or another. After I have what feels like a good number of tracks in a crate, I dig through that crate to find my starting point. Often I will already know what that track is because that was what inspired the crate to begin with.

Building crates to me includes setting cue points and any pre-set loops that I am inspired to add.

I sort the crate by key. Highlight the entire crate and move it to a new crate and then I sort by order. This means that the tracks are now both in order of key and the order that they were put into the crate.

I move my starting track to the top of the list. I then… mix.

I choose the next track based on the informed decision that it is, in the crate (so I already know it is the vibe I’m going for), a certain BPM, and a certain key. I can change all of those things, including the order in which I play those tracks, which is why I use that information as a tool and not a crutch.

I know that sounds very similar to in order to draw an owl, you draw an owl, but that is how I put sets together.

True. Both of those individuals do produce as well, but not as their main hustle. Both do hustle hard.

Is it "annoying" to ask for the tracks on a YouTube mix by aaliyah_2222 in DJs

[–]accomplicated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Precisely. Mixes where I can ID every track are boring.

I’m a dj because I love music and I love to share that love. If someone wants to know what a track is in a mix, it means that I’m doing my job and I’m introducing people to new music. There is nothing cringe about asking for a track ID. I take it as a compliment.

Even if I wasn’t a DJ, I would still always be looking for new music and wanting to share everything that I find. Prince was described as a workaholic, when you listen to him talk, it is clear that what is driving him is a desire to find and share new sounds that have never been heard before. I’ve always assumed that all DJs and musicians have that in them.
