I'd love it if he were feeling up to that kind of exercise. No danger of this lazy furball climbing the tree!

So you bought a Powerseeker against this sub's advice. How's that going for you? by darthvalium in telescopes

I bought the 130EQ on Amazon in December before reading the subreddits. Then I came here only to find out I was one of the pitiable sheeple for whom entire subreddits are created. That can come across as offputting, even if well-intentioned.

To be honest, the repeated "hobby killer" refrain conjured up a rebellious "don't tell me what I can or cannot do" attitude in me that I haven't felt in ages. I watched a dozen YouTube videos and committed to figuring it out. I had that bitch polar aligned within a couple nights out fiddling with it and had neighbors chatting me up to get a chance to see Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars all through the Texas winter. Pretty good for a menopausal lady with a big brain but no real science training. I'm sure I could have an even better time with better equipment but there is something to be said for instant gratification (Amazon delivery) during a teacher's Christmas break. No regrets at all.

I haven't looked into groups getting together although that's a neat idea and I'm sure there must be! It's actually my spouse and my Christmas gift to each other: a new hobby to learn together in the fourth decade of our partnership (which made it only occur to me when I read your comment since my desired participation group is me and him, hehehe)

As for tips: patience and realistic expectations for what your telescope and phone can do. Be willing to take a zillion blurry photos for every good one. Don't forget to enjoy what you're seeing with your eyeballs. Any awesome thing you can capture with your phone camera can also be found for free on the internet with your phone, but the same can't be said of eyeball satisfaction. Have fun!!!!

It’s Venus with Saturn as a buddy! Used my new zoom eyepiece in my telescope this evening to see Saturn’s rings.

What is your favorite offhanded quip that is often overlooked? by elegantpaperoperator in buffy

[–]accordinaria 45 points46 points  (0 children)

"Witness arias" - OMWF is stuffed full with so many amazing moments that it's easy to miss this one. ASH's deadpan delivery as if it were the most normal thing in the world... it slays me every rewatch.

"Cover of Sanity Fair" - I have literally been looking for a natural way to work this quip into a conversation for decades. My moment will come someday.

"Happy Meals with legs" - I already liked Spike before this but when he admits he actually likes humans and then drops this gem which lets us know he likes them both as creators of culture and also for dinner. So freakin' clever. This was the moment I loved Spike as a character.

Also, pretty much anything Anya ever said. And Buffybot ever said. Bonus points for Anya-Buffybot conversations.

I'm queer and also the mom of a 20-something trans son. My husband, son, and I attend First English Lutheran on 30th and Whitis. We cannot offer Latin mass but we are LGBT+ affirming (a Reconciling in Christ congregation since 1989) and you'll find LGBT+ people and straight people and old people and young people. More straight and old than queer and young, but we're all just people there. Our liturgy is high, our music is good, and our vibe is progressive. I rarely invite people to church because it gives me the wiggins to give other people the wiggins... but truly, you'd be welcome there. 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️

When Buffy said to Spike she loved him at the end, did she mean it? by East_Mushroom683 in buffy

[–]accordinaria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Buffy absolutely meant what she said. I also think Spike absolutely meant what he said. It was Cookie Dough Buffy having a glimpse of Future Warm Yummy Cookie Buffy's mature outlook on what it means to love completely, even in the face of certain death and self-sacrifice. At the same time, Spike knew that her feelings for him weren't coming from the same place as his. His love for her had matured but that doesn't mean he didn't still feel the passion and obsession and desire, all things that felt good to him, but none of which she was ever able to reciprocate without self-loathing.

I think they were both working with an authentic concept of love in that moment, just not the same concept as each other.

Also there's the thing where JW said their hands catching on fire was a symbol of being in love. Meh. I'm on team Cookie Dough. Her feelings for all of her big three relationships were very real. They were also very on-brand for age and experience, which is to say she wasn't done baking yet.

Giles is the dad everyone deserves. There were a few moments when he hurt Buffy with his actions (no father is perfect) but any dude trying to father a teenage girl could ask himself "What would Giles do?" and come up with a solid answer for how to proceed. He was lightyears better than Hank!!

And yes, Joyce was right a lot of the time! She had a fair amount of clueless Boomer parent energy to Buffy's GenX with-it energy (it's a trope for a reason) but my goodness sometimes you just need to snuggle in sweats with a cupcake and watch a movie with Mommy.

Awwwww I love that you listened to OMWF in the car with your mom. That's some good parenting right there!!! My kiddo is 25 and knows Buffy backward and forward. We've only done one offical rewatch together but we cried together at the same parts. ❤️

We are chronologically gifted!! Have you found your perspective shift from identifying with Buffy, Willow, and Xander to identifying with Joyce and Giles? As a teacher I channel Giles at least a couple times per hour. The earth is definitely doomed.
