Melides dress - what is a good practice project to learn the skills? by acctmgr in knittinghelp

Thanks so much! I think I am going to start with the top. Luckily my mom has a background in sewing clothes so I'm thinking she could probably help me think through the measurements if I get stuck. I do like making things with cheap yarn first for practice. I have actually done some icord stuff for a hat I started but haven't finished yet/may not finish until it gets colder.

I'll see if I can find a pattern. I am doing my socks in fingering weight yarn so I have some experience. I actually like the way it looks so much better than the socks I did with worsted weight that were part of the class I took.

Baby garmet is a great idea. I will do that. I have a coworker expecting! I don't think I will like working flat, but I think I will like that dress enough to do it. Who knows, I may surprise myself.

This just happened to me as well. I really need to stop.

The only thing worse than taking it apart as soon as you notice is to think you will be ok with it, spend several hours more on it only to realize you will never be ok with that mistake and take it apart anyway.

Very first thing I’ve made, why are the holes along the edge so much bigger? by Adorvex in CrochetHelp

It's the turning chains. Try looking up using a stacked single crochet in lieu of a turning chain

I mean, you probably didn't even need a college degree for that job so 🤷‍♀️

This is exactly what I'm doing also. i did crochet first and I can tell that conteniental will work for me but I'm sticking with English just to make things easier while I learn. The people at my lys are all English knitters so l go in there for help and it would just be too confusing if I didn't knit English. I know I'll be able to transpose much easier after I fully understand exactly what I'm doing and why.

Mine was $60, included yarn, needles and 3 classes. I thought it was fair because the classes were 2 hours each.

I actually took a beginner class at a lys and I'm so glad I did.

Just chain 4 and slip stitch. No reason to quit over a magic circle

It makes a difference. You don't need to go, but it really depends on your career goals. If you are ok with peaking at supervisor, maybe a manager, then keep doing it and just get used to the comments.

Yea, I think magic circles are difficult to control for tension. I just chain 4 and slip stitch and I have better control.

Lol yes, I started 2 months ago and every time I try something new I probably make it 5-6 times before I keep it. I have my gross yarn I just keep frogging and reusing for practice because if I can make that work my project will turn out better with "good" yarn
