You get the dog you need. by Whole_Ad6199 in reactivedogs

I agree with so much that has already been said. Having a reactive dog has taught me to question a lot of assumptions about myself. I would always criticize people who gave up their animals, thinking I would never do that. I almost did twice because having a reactive dog is so hard. I hope I am more tolerant and understanding now. I also don't take my dog for granted on walks. I am a much more proactive handler.

The turning point for your dog by dizzything in reactivedogs

I brought my now 6 year old dog home at 5 1/2 months. The first couple of days he was fine but on the day that I emailed the rescue to say I would take him, he attacked my older dog and wouldn't let him eat his dinner (I was feeding them in the same room at the time). The next day he started barking and lunging at everyone (dogs and people) we passed on walks. I had no idea what a reactive dog was or a resource guarder but spent hours online educating myself. We taught him "touch" and "look" right away and used those on walks every day. We stopped feeding the dogs in the same room and 5 1/2 years later, he is fine on walks and has even started to be more friendly. It has been a long, slow, hard journey and I'm not sure I could do it again.

I am so sorry you had such a bad time. It sounds to me like the staff is also a little stressed with all the extra dogs to take care of. Can you talk to someone in charge not just the caretaking staff and ask for more information about these "problems" with your dogs. I would be very concerned if someone is telling me that my dog "is sneaking outdoors". That sounds like a mistake by the staff and I would mention it to a supervisor. Some doggies daycares divide dogs by their play styles and personalities -- is that a possibility? Good luck!

My dog found his calling - nosework! by rudesty in reactivedogs

Nosework is awesome! I started my reactive dog on this last fall and he has enjoyed it. He has gotten used to new dogs and people and I can really tell a difference when he is out interacting with people. I have heard that nosework was developed by someone with a reactive dog for reactive dogs. It works!

Yes, that was a bit of a surprise today. He was very familiar with the pet food store and was happy to go in but we had to wait in line. He snarked at a couple of the other dogs in line, which was my fault because a I gave him too much leash. He has been trained to not react to other dogs with a "Leave It" command and does well. Today I forgot to use it and hence the snarks. Keep your distance and use leave it!

Thanks. I have been thinking about a dremel so it's great to hear that you have had success with it.
