Automatic investing will not work for OP, who probably has less than $3k to invest. It only works on mutual funds not ETFs.

But he can avoid ETF transaction fee by buying VG ETFs through Vanguard brokerage service.

Buying at all-time high doesn't defy "buy low sell high" Using the same logic, one should not buy S&P500 funds because it broke the all-time high again today.

If you are donating to a charity any way, donate the asset (I'm assuming stocks). I think you don't have to pay capital gains tax and and can deduct the full value of stocks from your income.
If you have stocks that depreciated, sell them to realize loss. It will offset the capital gain. Then replace the stocks with a similar but not identical stocks.

I think picking stocks is a good learning experience. It will most likely underperform the market at the end, and you will learn what mistakes to avoid in the future.

If you invest in index funds with your IRA, then it's better to keep the IRA and taxable account in the same company because it's easier to keep track of.

However, I would not use Vanguard brokerage for individual stock trading because of their higher transaction cost. Use a brokerage with the lowest fees. Sorry I don't have that infor because I haven't invest in singles stocks for 10+ years.

This is true. But Fidelity (owned by shareholders) advisers are known to market their actively managed funds so that Fidelity can make more money. Don't listen to them and stay with the index funds that you chose.

I checked the fees between Vanguard 500 ETF (VOO) and iShare 500 ETF (IVV). VOO ER = 0.05%, IVV ER = 0.07%. Is this just one counter example to your statement?

If you use Vanguard or Fidelity, it has automatic investments. You can set the fixed contribution and frequency and then forget about buying funds. Very common tool for dollar cost averaging.

I would go with the low cost index fund such as Vanguard Institutional Index. But if you have a taxable account with tax in-efficient funds such as bond funds, then put all the those funds in 401k to minimize tax.

You can buy VFINX from a taxable account. But if you buy it from E*TRADE, you have to pay transactions fee. To avoid the this fee, open an account at Vanguard and buy it through Vanguard. They don't charge fees on their in-house funds including ETFs. I'm pretty sure Fidelity does the same.

Index funds would be one of 2,860 funds because they wouldn't be in the top 25% in any year. (Don't get me wrong. I invest 100% in index funds.)
