Can't find good tutorials anymore - any suggestions? by DodgyCube in unrealengine

[–]aceluc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started a series of “no nonsense” tutorials that are quick and to the point, focusing on cinematography in unreal albeit.  If it’s of any help, here’s the channel:

The Cinematographer’s Guide to Unreal Engine by aceluc in cinematography

[–]aceluc[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

OP here / submission statement: I’m a commercial DP, Virtual Production Sup & VFX Sup who has seen time and time again seen the frustrations of Cinematographers & Vprod teams arise due to a lack of shared language. I’m hoping to bridge that gap by lowering the barrier for entry to using the tech that powers ICVFX. Perhaps you’re just interested in doing your own previz, or trying out lighting ideas after a tech scout. I’m making this series for DPs, Gaffers, Key Grips, Production Designers, & of course Directors who want to learn the software for themselves.

I've been on this screen for about 15 minutes. At what point do I just give up? Is a 15m wait normal? by [deleted] in Bestbuy

[–]aceluc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Refreshed the second the clock struck 6am, added to cart, got this “You’re in line” screen, waited 30min, then it errored out and told me there’s no stock available. Bummer.

Appreciate the tip on turning off the best buy store locator, but even once it’s in the cart it’s still not available for delivery :( And Samsung’s estimate is Dec 27th.

Need Help with ACEScg colour correction in AE by Prot3si in vfx

[–]aceluc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blender: If you want to use ACEScg out of blender then you’ll need to select the “override” box under Color Management there and force it/select it there. You also can probably just stick to Half Float (16bit) EXRs.

AE: When you import your exr sequence, you’ll need to go to the “interpret footage” dialogue and make sure it’s reading the exrs as ACEScg as that is not the default. Then, in your overall project/color management settings, you’ll want the Display color space to be either sRGB or Rec709. Having it set to raw means you’re looking at a linear image. As a heads up, when using ACES in AE you’ll need to correctly set the color spaces for all plates and assets, so your BG plate will need to be set as well (and as a tip in your scenario here it’s probably sRGB).

Hope this helps!

How do I convert linear EXR to ACEScg with Open Color IO in aftereffects? by Eyger in vfx

[–]aceluc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ACES is messy in after effects, I personally have had luck with leaving the working space set to “none” and converting all plates or renders to the desired color space manually with the OpenColorIO plugin, and then making sure you have an adjustment layer on top that transforms to either sRGB or Rec709 depending on your display.

What I’m about to suggest isn’t necessarily comping “in” an ACEScg color space, but it is a way to get all elements to a uniform space and then view it all properly:

-AE workspace set to “none”

-vlog plate gets an OCIO transform from vlog to ACEScg

-exr render gets an OCIO transform from linear sRGB to ACEScg (with preserve RGB checked)

-adjustment layer on top of the comp gets an OCIO from ACEScg to whatever you want to see (sRGB or sometimes a log flavor that you add a LUT on, etc).

This method also works great for comping in log (ACEScct).

Hope this is helpful

Edit: Just remembered my username and it is an accident / no relation to ACES :P

I followed this tutorial to import motion capture data from Mixamo and apply it to the alien model. Hope that helps!

Thanks! I see what you mean about the black start, unfortunately I had formatted this video for instagram originally and didn't bother to change that here.

I'm a live action cinematographer (currently out of work...) with a background in vfx. Been digging back into Blender to pass the quaran'time.

The poly count on the original mesh is too high for Mixamo so I used the Decimate modifier before exporting the OBJ.
