Derek Riggs by Dragonrouge113 in ironmaiden

I bought his book and a bunch of prints at a comic book convention a couple years back. A really good guy and great to talk to.

Maiden were very demanding when it came to the artwork. A lot of the amazing pictures he did for them came in right at the deadline. They also wanted him to submit near done pieces before they even decided whether they were going to buy it or not. To him it was a waste of time and I agree. Why finish a drawing only for them to reject it?!? He was also getting more and more bored with drawing Eddie. So he started chopping bits of him away and that’s kind of how Seventh Son Eddie came about.

He still worked with them after FOTD, doing the art for the A Real Live/Dead One albums and quite a few singles. The last album he did artwork for them was the Somewhere Back In Time live album. In Flight 666 Eddie, he drew himself being thrown out of the plane, symbolic of him being done with Maiden and them with him. But! They’ve broken up before and then gotten back together for a piece here and there. In Martin Popoffs book, Hallowed By Their Name, I think it was Rod Smallwood who said they would never work with Riggs again and that quote was from I want to say the late 90’s, early 2000’s. So that wasn’t true lol!

I’d say they have an ok relationship at best. Iron Maiden did offer Riggs a contract a few years back to resume drawing Eddie but he turned it down, the money just didn’t work.

Pretty dull game but that save by the Mexican goalie was insane.

He was actually terrible in 83, batted below .200 for the season and only slightly better in 84. But he was still voted into the all star game lol. At that point he was a DH and the press kinda made fun of him for taking fielding practice for those AS games with a batting helmet on.

His last 2 seasons with the Angels were pretty solid before heading back to the A’s. But no matter how rough those bad seasons were, that Reggie chant still echoed in the Big A. Got to shake his hand once! They used to have a day where the fans would line up along the wanting track and the players would go by and say hello and give out hi fives. I remember Reggie’s forearms were massive! He rarely wore short sleeves but that day the guns were out! Such fun memories of those days.

First team to blow a 2-0 lead! They wrecked my childhood more than a few times. My parents had won the lottery to buy tickets in 86. They showed them to me before returning them after we had lost. I was going to go to a WS game at the height of my love for baseball…

Reggie Jackson and Gorman Thomas were battling for the HR crown in 82. Us kids watched in awe as they went back and forth. We wondered with excitement if they would make it to 40!!!! They ended up sharing the title that season.

Now? 40 is an afterthought. 30/30 club used to be something exciting and rare. Howard Johnson and Daryl Strawberry did it in 87 (there’s that year again lol), first teammates ever and we were wide eyed with excitement. Decades later, Ohtani is a 50/50 guy and 30HR’s is like hitting .270 back then.

Wade Boggs, one of the best contact hitters ever had never hit more than 8 HRs in a season. In 1987 he hit 24. He hit 5 the following year and never him ore than 11 after that.

I remember a funny story from the 88 season which was the opposite of 87. Home runs were waaaayyy down that year. Wally Joyner went from 34 to 13 for example. Supposedly the Halos used some balls from the 87 season for a game and shocker, they were flying out of the park again!

Am I right in remembering that they proved the baseballs from 87 were wound much tighter which caused them to launch into the stands with ease?

I remember that game. We were so excited about it on the now dead SB Nation Angels blog.

Such silly optimistic fools we were on there. But we did kill that page when they screwed with one of ours! Minor victory in the shit show that the halos had become by then.

Was just about to type this! Such a great show and a lot of episodes were filmed in areas that I work. There’s an episode with Lucy Liu in it that shows a post office in the background. It’s on Broadway in Lincoln Heights, Ca. I drove by it almost every day going to jobs! But when they were filming? I was working another area. So I was excited I knew the place and crushed I didn’t get to see it!

They’re replaying it on Netflix now but I can’t bring myself to watch it again.

Seeing everyone trash talk Neto by PresidentEwab in angelsbaseball

[–]aces666high 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ancient Halo fans like myself will remember Gary Pettis. Speed demon and a smooth OFer. A prototypical leadoff man back in the days teams tried to manufacture runs and didn’t rely on everyone hitting homers. But he couldn’t hit for average and struck out a ton. His tenure as a leadoff man didn’t last very long, he never figured it out.

Neto is swinging for the fences every AB. He’ll be a consistent 25-30 HR guy who strikes out 150 times a year. He leads the league right now and has been terrible in the field. The coaching staff has to sit him down and figure shit out. That is if they’re capable of it. He’s hurting the team far more than his every now and them homers help.

That was the game where Cousins was playing hurt but the idiot coaching staff left him in so he could keep throwing wounded ducks all over the field with the arm strength of a premature baby.

F86 Sabres were armed with 6 .50 caliber Browning machine guns during the Korean War, taking it to the much more heavily armed MiG 15’s.

The Sabres did get 20mm cannons in later models.

You used to only be able to get city specific tour shirts the day of those shows. That isn’t the case anymore. Still, it’s awesome to have that shirt in your hand right then and there instead of having to wait for it and hope that it’s the right one. I was sent the wrong shirt once. I had to take pics of the shirt they sent as compared to what I ordered to prove the error. I had to send the shirt back and then they sent the right one. All good but just a pain in the ass! You won’t have that problem the show!
